Can solar panels generate lift?

Recommended Posts

I know I'm an idiot. I was just curious if large solar panels can be used to generate lift, as a sort of replacement for wings, assuming everything else about the plane is structurally sound. These types of bigger panels are not physicsless, right? That's why I ask.

Here's an example of the type of panels I mean (big, long, etc): fqahaaB.png

4 wheels, 2 panels, 1 booster, 1 runway, and you will find your answer (enable aerodynamic overlay with F12 to see if they generate lift).

Though I'd be surprised if they generated anything other than drag: panels rotate and KSP doesn't like moving things, so I'm pretty sure making them generate lift would cause a whole bunch of problems.

Oh, and be ware that solar panels like to disintegrate past a few m/s while in atmosphere.

Appreciate the quick post, and you're right; I probably should of realized this already. Thanks. :)

I think all parts generate Newtonian lift (as opposed to bernoullian, whichi s what is simulated by lift stats). What I would do, assuming you're just trying to have fun, is get them at 30-45 AoA with sun tracking. turn off sun tracking with tweakable everything mod, and turn on unbreakable craft in the debug menu and see if it will take off with a zero degree engine AoA

Last time I tried something like this, the panels did not generate lift -- and those gigantors were able to hold together up to 100 m/s. I actually launched a plane and deployed the gigantors in flight.
