How to select overlapping ship icons?

I have three vessels in close proximity. I want to target one of them while controlling another. Unfortunately the third ship is in the way while in the map view so I can't select the correct ship to target. Is there a way to deal with this other than accelerating one of the ships away and warping time until its far enough away?

If the ships are within 60km of each other, then you can do it in non-map view -- doubleclick the target ship's icon. (You may need to hit F4 to enable the ship icons.)

Otherwise, you may be able to zoom the map view in far enough to separate them enough to click on one and not the other. Besides that, I don't know of any way.

That's exactly when I find KER extremely useful to select target from a list of names, and even search names.
