So last night I built my first rover (only one I've ever intended to actually use) and plopped it down on the tarmac for a test-drive and... it goes no-where.  Zero m/s.  Wheel drive engaged, brakes off, plenty of power on-board.

I know wheels are screwed up, but I figured it would at least roll in some direction or other.  I checked the wheels, played with settings, nothing.  The leading pair and trailing pair of the 6 wheels are listed as "Wheel Blocked" when I pull up the parts though, despite the fact that there is nothing contacting the wheel's rotation.

Will the "Wheels Blocked" result come up if even only the axle and wheel struts are slightly recessed?

Does anyone know what conditions could cause this, given it appears that nothing should be impeding or contacting the actual wheels at all?

My apologies for not bringing pictures, I will try to do so Monday.

The wheel blocked "feature" is actually a work-around for a bug in the version of Unity that KSP 1.1 is currently using. Squad will be updating to a newer version of Unity in the not-too-distant future, so it will eventually be properly fixed.

For now the answer is basically "don't do any clipping or offsetting of the wheels".

Gottcha, :)   & thank you.  Rover re-design ensuing; though its a darn shame.

BTW, it's not just clipping and offsetting that block wheels.  Just having other parts too close to them will also do it, even if you don't see any way they could ever physically touch throughout the play of the suspension.

I just built my first  rover with primitive stock parts and I had to rotate all the gear (I used 4 fixed and two swivel).  No problems, very stable can go to 40mps on flat without flipping over.  Can do sharp turns up to 10mps with a load.  Now I did try rotating the capsule at one point and that was bad.  For science just put your stuff on top.  There are four small control wheels that add about 1mps of stability.

Pic here.

Edit: Meant to say I used a retractable landing strut in between the swivel gear as a parking break, but it explodes six out of ten times (be sure you are at a dead stop), the more robust retractable struts in the higher levels works great for this though, until we get working wheel chocks.

Edit Edit: I finally searched around and found the way to use the "parking break" (hold brake, his esc, release brake, resume game) which is just weird.

Ok, now there's just something plain funny here.  :?  I will get pictures before I expect a further reply, but back in 1.02 I gave up on rovers because I couldn't get them to accelerate at more than 1/10th m/s on the perfectly flat tarmac, and not at All on Any degree of grade.  I figured it was my install, or just something goofy about my potato-non-gaming laptop and KSP, so I gave up on rovers.

Now in 1.12 I just had a mission ("biological activity") that virtually mandated a rover, so I tried again.  I built a rover, got the wheels to all roll freely, and flew it to Minmus (thank you for tip @Geschosskopf).  Well I tell you, if each step of that mission wasn't down-hill from the previous one, it wouldn't have gotten the job done.  It was atrocious, and I could not even maintain established speed on Any type of grade.

Even given the gross wheel issues that came to be between 1.05 & 1.1, since these two issues are so identical I have to believe it is more an issue with my PC that than the game.  :(

I ended up building a Hopper, and launching around that way.

I will try to get photos of my rover & the wheel settings, and we'll see if someone can identify what might be causing this gross reluctance to rove (RTR Syndrome).

Turn off the traction control. It applies brakes if any wheel is slipping. And on Minmus, your wheels will slip a lot. So your brakes will always be on, and you won't go anywhere.

Ok, this one deserves a pie in the face or a big neon sign pointing at me saying IDIOT by @Red Iron Crown.

I've had rover issues for over a year, posted about them twice, gave up on them- couldn't figure out why they wouldn't "go" faster than a crawl.

...I have NEVER read or heard it spoken on any You-Tube video that to drive a rover forward you press "W".

YOU PRESS 'W' !!!!

...sigh...

...the rover works fine.

...I'll, just, ... be over here...  >.>

Yeah... I remember back when I downloaded KSP 0.90 or something and the settings got reset. I built dozens of rovers but none of them worked. Then I remembered that my keys weren't set to IJKL anymore.

We all do slightly dumb things from time to time. At least it wasn't two years...
