Atmosphere Curves for 10x resize

Recommended Posts

Using Sigma Dimensions to rescale my kerbol system to 10x to make things more realistic, i came to a problem when i rescaled the atmosphere to 130km high (similar to earth). Because reentry from interstellar was roughly 10km/s, and the stock atmosphere curves are balanced for a much lower velocity reentry, I was wondering what mod i can download or what i can change in the game config files to make the atmosphere curves realistic ie: not explode due to overheating 10 seconds into reentry. And no, I don't want the entirety of realism overhaul.

Take a look at the RSS Earth config file for the curve. IIRC the atmosphere on Earth in RSS extends to 140km, so it's not exactly the same, but it might be close enough, given the upper atmosphere tends to be pretty thin.

I haven't used Sigma Dimensions myself, though, so I'm not really sure how you would apply it. I would guess that you need to find the Kopernicus config or equivalent and replace whatever atmosphere curve is there.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there were an easier way of doing this; I have limited knowledge of non-RSS Kopernicus mods. What happens if you take the 10x Kerbol system and give that to Sigma Dimensions instead of scaling it yourself?

I'm running Sigma Dimensions at 6.4x scale, with an atmosphere height of 1.3 (so it's 91 km). I added SMURFF at 0.5 lever to reduce the mass of returning pods, and then bumped down atmospheric heating to 0.9. Works great and feels right - pods with heatshields will come through fine, as will spaceplane parts with a proper reentry profile, but most other things will overheat and explode. I tried using RealHeat briefly, but it was conflicting with another mod and throwing lots of NREs.
