Craft jump off the surface when exiting time warp (possibly only with mining drills deployed)

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that sometimes when exiting time warp, a vessel will jump up off the planet surface. It might only be happening to vessels that have mining drills deployed. It can lead to destruction of parts. I think I first noticed this before I installed most of my mods; I don't think the mods are relevant but I've noticed two other people report this issue so I'm going to see if I can get them to contribute to this thread.

My issue may or may not be relevant. I just haven't been playing much since I realized that some of the methods I used to use just don't work well in 1.1.x. Here is the video I made of the issue.

What I would like to see is documentation describing what each parameter in the landing gear cfg files does. That way I can at the very least easily configure my landing gear for my specific needs. Even better would be some tweakables in the right click menu that I could use to adjust the legs on the fly so to speak. Anyway, I hope this all gets lined out soon.

Actually I'm not sure that your issue is the same as mine; I originally thought it was, sorry!

Here's a video of my issue: https://youtu.be/dhT0kMkOGYE

@THX1138 Well, it is possible that the landing legs are causing the same problem for both of us, we are just expressing it in slightly different ways. Each of our crafts contain landing legs, wheels, and docking ports. I am forcing the bouncing by manipulating the landing legs. In your case, it looks like before the physics loads, the craft is resting on the wheels. When physics kick in, the legs extend and the craft bounces. (Keep in mind, that before I edited the config file to change impactTolerance from 150 to 300, I wasn't seeing the bouncing, but rather the legs were exploding.) I believe that the problem can be alleviated with some more config file adjustments, it's just that I don't have, and frankly don't want to spend, the time to "trial and error" the problem away. It would be nice if @SQUAD would provide some info for the landing leg and wheel .cfg parameters. Specifically, exactly what each parameter changes, and the values that are expected in each parameter.

Same problem.  I'll switch ships to my Mun NERDS (Newly Expanded Research Development Station), and it will drift off the surface, and then settle back down.  Not terribly problematic given the small size of my station and the low gravity, but irritating.  My next trip up will include some of the KIS/KAS ground stanchions and portable struts.  I intend to see if I can strut the station to the ground and prevent this "bounce".

I've also seen this happen with landed ships if I'm walking a Kerbal around.  Time warp a little bit, and you've got an action movie trailer: dramatic walk away without looking back at the explosion.
