IMPORTANT: Contest Winners Chosen!

Winners have been chosen. Before I announce the winners, I want to thank everyone who participated. All the designs were good and it was hard to pick a top three, because there were so many good designs submitted. Nevertheless, I have chosen the top three. Everyone will get a badge, and the top three have their name on their badge so nobody can steal it. EVERYONE FROM FOURTH TO 9TH PLACE IS NOT IN ORDER. IF YOU ARE THE LAST MENTIONED ON THE LIST OF 4-9, YOU ARE NOT LAST PLACE. Now, the results.

1st: Iceolator88
2nd: SGT Flyer
3rd: Munbro Kerman

4th-9th NOT IN ORDER:
ImmaStegosarus
Fraus
Almost NASA
Firemetal
Gaarsat

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

YOU CAN POST DESIGNS OR PICTURES OF YOUR DESIGNS HERE IF YOU WANT TO SHARE. BEFORE YOU HIT THAT BACK BUTTON AND GO FIND ANOTHER CHALLENGE BECAUSE THIS ONE IS TOO HARD, READ THE ENTIRE RULES LIST AND MAIN PARAGRAPH.

Main paragraph:

Hello! This is a challenge to build a replica of the Soyuz TMA-9 LAUNCHER with decent accuracy. Now I do NOT expect it to be perfect but I expect something that looks like the Soyuz launcher. However, the Soyuz capsule does not have to look exactly or super close to the actual one, but please make sure I can tell what it is. I should not have to say this, but NO HYPEREDIT!!!! I am allowing modded parts, however DO NOT use the three following mods: Bobcat Industries Soviet Parts Pack, Soviet Spacecraft (Soyuz/Vostok/Voskhod/LOK/LK) and Tantares. I do not allow use of those two mods in this challenge because the first one is nearly identical in every way to Soyuz and the capsule on the second one is almost identical to the real Soyuz capsule. Also, I would strongly encourage the use of KW rocketry, Fuel Tanks Plus, tweakscale, and that one mod that allows you to change the texture of fuel tanks. The replica you produce does NOT have to be the same size as the real Soyuz, but don't make it any less than 5 meters tall or any more than 200 meters tall. HOWEVER there are two exceptions to this: The first exception to the 5 meter minimum height is that if you are trying to build a mini Soyuz. In that case the height restrictions AND the ability to orbit Kerbin and land safely are considered to be invalid. The second exception to the 200 meter height limit is if you use stock parts or real scale parts.  The replica must be able to fly, orbit Kerbin, and return safely.  IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO MAKE YOUR VESSEL ORBIT KERBIN AND RETURN SAFELY BECAUSE YOU ARE NEW TO THE GAME OR DO NOT HAVE THE SKILL BUT STILL ARE ABLE TO BUILD A GOOD REPLICA, MESSAGE ME OR REPLY TO THE THREAD AND I WILL ASSIST YOU. I STRONGLY RECCOMEND USING THE REFERENCE SCREENSHOTS AND IMAGES BELOW OR USING ONES YOU LOOK UP WHEN BUILDING YOUR DESIGN.

Misc important details:

Examples are below the rules section. You are allowed to post your design with the number of details and screenshots you desire if you just want to share it, in that case rules don't apply. More details below. 10 possible bonus points. Submissions that meet requirements will be posted at the bottom of this post. Give me time to review your submission, depending on how busy I am it may take a few hours to a few days. Expect under a day for normal circumstances. I will be making a badge that will be given to contest winners. Alternate launch sites, visual mods, aesthetic or game play enhancement mods are allowed. If you want to know if a mod is ok to use or not ask me.

When submitting your design, remember that:

1. I will only accept a total of 50 submissions into the challenge for each category (50 for stock, 50 for modded). BUT there is no limit to people sharing your designs. Make it clear if your design is a submission to the challenge or if you are just sharing it. HOWEVER, if I get more submissions then expected I will increase the limit of both to 100.

2. You must read all the rules.

3. You really should read the main paragraph if you have not already.

4. The examples below are here to help you

5. I am here to help if anybody has questions or issues.

Requirements for winning:

The winning design will be chosen based on how well the rules were followed, quality, accuracy, originality, and how much I like each design. (Do not worry, nobody has a unfair advantage and there is nothing a certain person can do to make me automatically declare them the winner.) If ANYBODY manages to do what the person in the video did with the same level of detail, rules followed, then I will be extremely impressed and the user who was able to pull it off will have a very high chance of winning.

How the challenge will be judged:

Due to mods giving people that do the challenge in stock a disadvantage, I have decided to split up the challenge in the follow way: Designs with mods will be judged separately from stock designs. So there will be a winner for the stock Soyuz and a winner for the modded Soyuz. I did this to make things fair for everyone. However, if your design is fully vanilla but you use non part mods and no mods that edit default configs it will count as vanilla as the way the rocket is designed is what is being judged (for the most part) here. I am considering picking 5 designs from each category as winners when I pick challenge winners, but this is the first challenge I have posted so how many winning designs there will be is subject to change.

Rules:

So in a nutshell, here are the rules: (If you are a beginner and are overwelmed, see rules 10, 9, and all exceptions in this post)

1. You CANNOT use Bobcat Industries Soviet Parts Pack,  Soviet Spacecraft (Soyuz/Vostok/Voskhod/LOK/LK), and or the Tantares parts pack.

2. Your creation must look like the Soyuz launcher. It does NOT have to be perfect. (Examples below)

3. The Soyuz capsule you make does NOT need nearly the same detail level as the launcher does, but please make it recognizable. (Examples are shown below)

4. Your creation must be over 5 meters tall but less than 200 meters tall. (EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE ARE LISTED ABOVE. MAKE SURE TO READ THEM THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO PEOPLE WHO USE STOCK PARTS, REAL SCALE, AND PEOPLE WHO ARE MAKING A MINI SOYUZ ROCKET)

5. Your rocket MUST be able to fly. (No exceptions, but if you want to submit your rocket to share with people I will allow that, it just wont be entered in the contest.)

6. Your rocket must be able to orbit Kerbin. (THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS to this rule listed about halfway down in the main paragraph of the contest.) YOU CANNOT USE HYPEREDIT!!!!! I WILL KNOW IF YOU DO!

7. Your rocket must be able to return from Kerbin orbit and land safely. (THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS to this rule listed a bit past halfway down in the main paragraph of the contest.)

8. You must provide images of your rocket in the following places/situations:

       8a. On the launchpad.

8b. a few hundred meters off the launchpad (Void if replica is a mini Soyuz and cannot fly.)

8c.Right after the first stage boosters have separated. (Void if replica is a mini Soyuz and cannot fly.)

8d. In orbit with map view open showing trajectory. (Void if replica is a mini Soyuz and cannot fly.)

8e. Landed after re-entry. (NO CHEATING!) (This means splashed down or on land, or reasonable slow enough to imply that it survived the landing)

8.1: Optional images of your creation:

      8.1a. With parachute deployed

8.1b. With crew next to the rocket.

8.2: Bonus points!!

If you use similar engines on your rocket to what is actually used (looks wise) then you get bonus points!! (Provide a image from the vehicle designer in the VAB)

If you transport the rocket to the launchpad by train you get bonus points. This however, will require a picture for proof and I hope you have a means of lifting the rocket up vertically. A video would be desired but you are not required to use a video.

9. Any other images are allowed but please make it clear that they are extra images

10. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE MEETING THESE REQUIREMENTS FOR ANY REASON, TELL ME AND I WILL HELP YOU. IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER AND CANNOT MAKE YOUR REPLICA ORBIT KERBIN OR LAND AFTER DE-ORBITING TELL ME!! DON'T LIE BECAUSE IF YOU DO YOU WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED.

11. Videos that show the process from launch to re-entry and landing will count towards all image criteria and you will not need images.

Examples:

A design that meets all the requirements for the contest: (Screenshots would be provided for all situations required if this was a actual submission)

Pictures and images for your reference when building:

Soyuz in flight:

Sojuz_TMA-9_into_flight.jpg

Soyuz engines: (No, you dont have to have the exact same setup of the engine clusters, but if you use something that looks pretty similar then you get bonus points.

Soyuz blueprints:Previous image. (Will be adding image of blueprints for Soyuz in a few hours) More details will be added soon.

Video (Anything past 1:50 in the video is more compelx then I require for the challenge, also that video shows a much more complex design then i am asking for, so don't stress about it.) At 1 minute in the video there is booster seperation.

Challenge participants:

Stock (NEW STOCK SUBMISSIONS WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTED AFTER SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19th. From there, I will judge the designs. JUDGING DELAYED UNTIL DECEMBER 12 DUE TO HOMEWORK winners and what place designs took will be given.)

First submission by almostNASA. http://imgur.com/a/e96r

This submission meets qualifications and is the first entry for this challenge. (The only mods used were ones that affected visuals, there were no part mods or anything that gives a unfair advantage.)

Hmm This might be Easy... Kerbal Esscences has done this many times also, can I use Raidernicks Soviet rockets and spaceCraft Pack?

One question: Who is Kerbal Esscences?

On the mods: Can you send me a link to those mods so I can decide if you can use them?

It appears that Reliants or Vectors on a 2.5 to 1.25m quadcoupler offset up along with a few Twitch radial engines is the closest you can get to the engine cluster design I can think of.

What are Reliants and Vectors?

here's a preview for my entry :) (full Stock) (note, i built it a few months ago - however, i made the video for the challenge ;))

i have to do a few video edits before uploading the video, but here's a preview image :) - i used the numbers from the soyuz blueprints, but roughly scaled down to kerbal size (tried to get dimensions to roughly 64% of the real size) - thanks for the Fairings

383 parts (rocket + spacecraft), 31.8m long, 5.9m wide, 156 tons fueled. (boosters included) - it flies like a dream :) (with wide fuel margins in the upper stage when launched on an equatorial orbit)

the spacecraft itself is 69 parts, 5.9 tons :) (Veeeery cramped, clipped multiple MK1's ^^)

http://i.imgur.com/Wlk9Lwal.png

http://i.imgur.com/HH3xNXkl.png

video to follow :)

for all those who want to attempt building it, here's a link to a blueprint avaible online :) (warning, 3000x4000 resolution image ^^) - russian language, however, the dimension numbers written on it use the metric system :) (afterwards, feel free to scale it down or not - 'ksp' size is roughly scaled down to 64% of real size. (when comparing the MK1-2 command pod to the real apollo command pod)

So it seems that the Soyuz is great for going to orbit around Earth but on Kerbin, it is overpowered! Building a pretty accurate Soyuz replica here. It works ok and has enough DV for a Duna flyby.

Still not perfect. Added seperatrons to push away empty strap-on boosters but they're not enough. Moar Seperatrons! Also it wobbles a bit and I believe that is due to the massive gimbal of the vector engines. Just gotta majorly reduce that. Entry coming soon!

When you add the video I will mark this as the second contest submission. Mods i assume?

I request that you show me the capsule in orbit and show the boosters in the process of seperation. It will help me judge the design better. Once re-entry and map view of orbit is added I will mark this as the third contest submission in the stock category of the contest.

1.25m engines. Reliant (LV-T30) is the first liquid fueled engine on the tech tree, and Vector (S3 KS-25) is the most powerful 1.25m engine in the game.

Thank you! :)

Can you please send me the craft file? I would like to examine this and see the internals of the design you made. Also, how many parts does this have?

I've written it in the post :) 383 parts rocket + spacecraft, 69 parts for the spacecraft alone. i also have a version with a stock launch pad, around 700 parts (launch pad, + rocket) (which is the one i've put in the video ;))

That was just me showing a sneak peak of my current design. That wasn't my entry but here it is: Fully stock overpowered Soyuz replica.

Eh so much fuel left. Maybe I'll modify it and make it an Apollo style rocket. It could land the Soyuz spacecraft on the Mun if I removed mono-prop and added landing legs. Anyway I'll post the craft file in my showcase thread. (link in my sig)

Great challenge! Why don't you make it like speeding mullet's shuttle challenge after you've chosen the winner so everyone with a half-way decent design can win. Also it would be great to have a ribbon.

But great anyway.
