I had one (Enbart iirc) that did that in the bottom of the Mohole after bailing out due to lack of fuel.  His trajectory took him into the hole and he jet packed (relatively) safely down, after bouncing off the sides a fair bit.  Then he just kept jiggling about uncontrollably in the bottom until he did what your Jeb did.  I had no choice, but to terminate in the tracking station.  I did take screenshots, but it was just too dark in there to get a decent image.

I guess it could be something to do with having a kerbal both inside and outside something simultaneously.
