Don't know if this is the right place to post this...

Well, i wanted to ask if the possibility to edit the .cfg (correct me if i\'m wrong) parameters is going to stay until the last version of the game (final version-no more patches) or, for forever. Sorry if i posted this on the wrong place, it\'s because i\'m not pretty sure where was the place to post it, because i\'m new to the forums ^_^.

I see no reason why the devs would take cfg editing away.

Maybe because players can use them to \'cheat\', as the future updates will have some kind of money inserted in, (maybe making the price for certain parts 0?)

The game is designed to have a very open mod community. Since it is singleplayer, the devs do not need to add anything in that would police people. People play things their own way. If someone wants to cheat parts, that\'s their lookout.

I think Harv has a post relating to this a while back. I\'ll see if I can find it.

Hm... yeah, i see your point, but, i was just thinking, because some games (SP only games) doesn\'t allow that kind of editing... so it just came on my mind :|

A few relevant quotations

Yes, the idea is to make it as moddable as possible.

Currently it\'s already possible to add new parts, with custom models, sounds, textures and values.

Later, we plan to include even more, and add in a scripting interface so people can actually code their mods as well.

Cheers

I see no problem with including mod parts even in career mode. Maxis allowed it in The Sims, and it really doesn\'t affect gameplay.

Or rather, it will only affect gameplay if you choose to install mod parts and use them in career mode.

What I would like to do is add parameters to the cfg to let mod-makers specify just where on the techtree the part would become available, how long it would take and how much it would cost to research, or whether or not the part will be available in career mode at all.

One potentially good solution is to flag all parts to not appear in career mode by default, then set all stock parts to do so. That way, modders would have to update their packs to let them show in career mode, and would hopefully prompt them to mind the balance of the game.

The only situation I could see a problem with mods is in a competitive multiplayer environment, which to be quite honest is a long way away... So I wouldn\'t worry about mods affecting gameplay balance. It\'s the player\'s choice to use them or not.

Cheers

Editing the cfg is a necessary part of modding. If they made the cfg\'s hidden, it would be very hard to create/edit parts without a part editor, which then could be used to edit the stock cfg\'s, making the editor utterly useless to begin with.

Subsititute 'mod' for 'cheat' in his quotation. It\'s the same discussion
