In Hollywood on vacation - hello

Oh, you're in my old stomping grounds. Sorry, can't meet up with you, I moved away from that God-forsaken place years ago. But if you want some pointers from an ex-local:

  • Lunch at Barney's Beanery is a must. I miss that place. All of the other great dive restaurant hangouts of my youth are gone, but Barney's abides.
  • If you want to see a real movie/TV studio, skip Universal and do the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. Not as cool as it used to be, but still pretty cool.
  • If you're accosted on the street by a yuppie-looking thirty-something with a clipboard, give them a moment. You might score free tickets to a focus group preview of an unreleased movie. Used to happen to us all the time when I was in high school. Not as common these days, but you never know.

Pitch a kerbal movie idea to any film director looking person you see there!

Ha! That's the big joke. Nobody in the film industry would be caught dead in Hollywood these days. They're all down in Santa Monica, West L.A., Century City, Brentwood area. You'll find some of the older ones over the hill (get it!) south of Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks or Universal City, or up in Malibu. That's generally where they move when they grow up and stop partying. Most of the actual production studios (at least the ones that are left in the L.A. area) are up in the Valley now, except for Paramount.

Many thanks for the advice! I'll definitely see about grabbing lunch there. Last night we grabbed lunch at a random falafel place which was good but I doubt it compares. I don't know if we have time for the WB tour but I shall see.

By the way In-N-Out is amazing!

XD I went to one and I actually have to differ - 5 Guys Burgers and Fries is definitely the king :)

HEATHEN! LOL :D I was practically raised on In-N-Out, there was one just up the way from my house growing up. I'm so happy that the place we moved when we left California still has an In-N-Out. Animal-style, fries light, Neapolitan shake.

We have a 5-Guys too. It's a good burger, but it's way over-priced.

Oh, and I almost forgot: TOMMY'S! OMG, I love Tommy's! It's one of the few places I make an effort to get to when we're back in L.A. If they ever open one in Phoenix I'll be in big trouble. Don't know if I would recommend it to a tourist though, since everyone either loves it or hates it. If you love chili, and you're feeling adventurous, and you have a cast-iron stomach, give it a try. Double, extra chili, chili fries with cheese. Don't plan on being too far from a bathroom for the next day or so, just in case.
