Need help with modelling and UV rendering

I am attempting to make a mod, but have no idea how to assign textures to models. Currently I am using SketchUp with the SketchUV plugin for UV rendering, but if that does not work with KSP or is unnecessarily hard to use I can switch.

The two main things I need help with are:

  1. UV rendering in general.
  2. Making complicated shapes like engines.
