25 years ago, one of the greatest video game consoles of all time, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) or Super Famicom in Japan, was released to the public.

This console was amazing for it's time as it allowed Nintendo to bridge the gap from the 8-bit gaming era with the NES and enter the new 16-bit age. This console alongside the Sega Genesis (or MegaDrive outside of the US (boo!)) owned the 90s, and even helped pioneer new graphics, technology and polices that we still use today.

The Super Nintendo was the home to many new series started by Nintendo that they still continue, such as F-Zero, Star Fox, Pilotwings, Donkey Kong (referring to the Rare series, not the Arcade ports), and many many more.

The biggest aspect that defines this console was the "Bit Wars" that was occurring during this consoles lifetime where Nintendo had to compete against Sega for the video game market. Each of the companies consoles were known for their processing speed or more specifically the number of bits it could process. The original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was an 8-bit console, which was crushed by Sega when they released the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive, as it was a 16-bit system which meant it could have far superior graphics than the NES. Nintendo later release the SNES which allowed it to compete with the Sega Genesis as the SNES was also 16-bit. This is what led to a long strong of competition between the two companies. This competition run for the entire consoles lifetime and even after as it gave way to the Nintendo 64.

One of the most amazing things about this console was it's ability to persevere and overcome it's rival Sega as it stepped itself up with the Super FX Chip which allowed the console to run 3D shapes and also have many more graphical modes which trashed Sega Genesis. The Super FX Chip debuted with the release of Star Fox which was an immediate success.

As an owner of a SNES I've owned for even longer than I've been born (it was a hand me down), I can say first hand, this console is amazing and I love to pick it up and play it anytime. I can't believe after 25 years, this console is still so addicting and amazing even today.

To me everything about the console is amazing. The games, the graphics (for the games), and most of all, the music! The music from the games are so freaking awesome to listen to.

So tell me, do you own a Super Nintendo? Ever played one? What's your favorite games? Tell all :) .

Happy Birthday Super Nintendo! You've been an amazing machine for 25 years, and here's to another decade or more of your entertainment!

Truly living up to it's name as the SUPER Nintendo ENTERTAINMENT System

The Sneeze. I spent many hours in my neighbor's livingroom plonking on the Sneeze, trying to get whatever game we were playing (or trying to play) to work. SimCity is the only game I remember specifically getting to work on it, but I'm sure there were others.

Edit: And StarFox. Do a Barrel Roll.

Do a barrel roll came with the N64  , not the SNES.

I remember getting the original NES. And then my parents refusing to buy me a SNES because "You already have a perfectly good video game!"

This sadly was the peril for many kids, they wanted a Super Nintendo, but they already had one! Not understanding that it was more powerful. Try explaining what "bits" are as a kid. All you knew is it bad twice as many.

And no blast processing...

Seriously though, it was the first console I owned, after many years with a ZX Spectrum +2 and an Amiga 500.  To this day, Nintendo consoles are the only ones I buy.  They're never as powerful as the competition, but my god, Nintendo know how to make first-party titles.

My nephew spent a couple of weeks with my parents a short while ago.  To keep him occupied I lent him my RetroPi.  He had everything from the 8-16bit eras available to him, but he spent about 90% of the time on the SNES.  That pretty much says it all for me.

No blast processing but you've got mode 7!

ZX Spectrum and Amiga? Nice. Decent consoles. :)

Nintendo used to be the king but since the Wii, they've been on a downward slant. But your right :) Sony and Microsoft lack one thing Nintendo has; multiple generations of players. My parents love to pick up the Super Nintendo anytime and my dad loves the NES. My parents started with the NES, and I started with the SNES and when I was 4, got the GameCube.

Yeah :P the NES is great but when there's SNES games offered- it's hard to pass up on.

wait what is the snes again? oh that ancient box machine right?

No but seriously, it reminds me of the GameCube somehow, the thing i grew up with. Every old console looks like a GameCube to me, even though lots of them are not cubes. I also remember playing with my Dad's gameboy, it was amazing. Old nintedo stuff is cool and nostalgic. It is like stepping into life before you even existed.

Fun fact: I stole my aunts atlas, it was made in 1978 and it looks brand new, it has countries like the Soviet Union still in it, i am amazed. It gives me the same sort of feeling as playing with ancient Nintendo consoles, expect alot older.
