Disconnect science from tech research

Recommended Posts

I don't care about development of this game anymore. I'm just waiting for it to end just so I can mod it without worrying about saves being ruined by new updates. If the career will never change, then it's the only way to enjoy this game for me.

Hope they finish working on it soon.

Man Im sorry you feel that way. There really are some pretty elegant solutions to some of this stuff, I think they've just been so caught up in the Unity 5 aftermath that they haven't gotten to it.

I don't think so. I feel like the will to change the career mode in any way was never there. More like "apply more patchwork to make this almost work".

And now that all the tweaks are there there's no point to change it since it almost works.

I agree whole heartedly with this, It has never been a good system.  Trading moon rocks for boosters is not how R&D of rocket compoents works. In addition the current system is far too "grindy" you end up sending mission to place ONLY for the purpose of collecting the science. Also there are far too many places to collect science. I don't know if it still holds up in the current versions, but there was at one time enough science at KSC to unlock over 1300 points of the tech tree.

I agree that a better system would simulate investing time and money to develop your tech, rather that taking the moon's temperature to get a mainsail. I think that you could simulate this with a few {relatively small} changes to the game.

1)  Currently you get some science for recovering a vessel that has been in certain locations, such a landed on Duna. This is actually enough to fully support a space program, WITHOUT   doing any  science. I am currently playing a game where I have not done a single experiment, crew report, part test, or contract to gain science. And I just returned from my 2nd Dres mission with enough points to unlock The Nuclear engine, and the size 0&1 liquid fuel fuselages.

2)  You also get some science and money for doing "world's first" contracts. But this contract is hidden from you, only see the reward you collect, Try this, start a new game, Launch a rocket without accepting any contracts. You will receive 5 science for "vessel that survived a flight"  1 science for launching you first vessel, inspite of the fact that you didn't accept that contract, and some more science base on how high and far you flew. research the first 2 nodes, and launch again  fly higher faster, and further, maybe even sub-orbital, get more science, all without doing "science"

Taken together these first 2 points are enough to disconnect Science & R&D.

1) Change the collected reward to R&D points

2) Bring back the "world first" contracts for Speed, Altitude & Distance

3) Change the Adim Strategies to be R&D rather than science (maybe even have one for X amount of R&D each day/week/month for a cost of X funds}

4 Collect X amount Science from whatever location can now be a contract

5)Give X amount R&D for reaching a certian goals such as:

         a) cummulative amount of fuel burned

        b) cumulative amount of distance travelled

c)cumulative amount of days in space

That would leave the current tech tree intact, but at the same time make research more realistic

I think that science should give you better contracts and "engineer experience" for speeding up getting new parts (like reasearch in civ5) that would be improved with tests of parts and planes and stuff.

Research points is something I would actually be cool with. As long as it doesn't require me go places. I seriously don't need that water sample from Laythe's oceans to know more about gimballing engines.

Yeah, I also want to redo the testing contracts to be more logical and interesting(like having a plane or rocket or whatever taken out of an array of craft and they tell u test it for money.
