Sorry for the confusion, the original post was empty dV, since I was just kitbashing it. I think its total dV loaded is a bit over 1800. Since it would have more once it dropped off the cargo, it's an easy round trip, rather than being really tight like the poodle.

Haven't had an issue with it in a while. It's my primary station-construction port.

So I need let's say 1600 delta-v when towing to make an easy round trip, but would need to refill in Kerbins orbit. 

I need 2 mk 1 lf tanks per nuke, and 2 nukes for 22 tons or 4 nukes for 50 tons for a reasonable TWR.

With a poodle I can only tow up to 22 tons, and need over half an orange tank to make a safe round trip.

So the Poodle eats more fuel than I'm towing. In fact so do the nukes, as with the 22 ton load I carry 1440 litres of fuel, but the craft drinks 3200 litres. It only gets worse with 50 tons to pull. The only design that doesn't do this is 8 tanks with 2 nukes, towing 50 tons, but then I'm stuck with a terrible TWR.

Is it just me or is towing fuel really inefficient.

Nope, not just you. Mine it out of Minmus and haul from there to a minmus-orbit depot.
