The ''BEAST'' Rocket Challenge

Recommended Posts

So I have posted a craft on the craft exchange and after a few hours I am already seeing people referring to it as per \'\'challenge\'\'. So here it is. The official \'\'challenge\'\'.

Challenge is to take the Speed Breaker V1 rocket posted here: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=16783.0 and fly it.

The rocket has 18 LV-T30 engines, over 100 FL16/32 fuel tanks, over 500 struts to keep it somewhat rigid and your usual SAS modules.

Aside from that, it has 18 RCS units on each end to help with maneuvering in space or keeping it stable.

Challenge is to take that rocket and fly it. Fastest flight wins, I want you to break all speed limits but not modify one bit (though the rocket is still in its \'\'alpha\'\' stages.

Yes, it is as simple as that.

There IS a catch:

It reduces frame rates on even some of the best systems to 1 or less frames per second.

It tends to rip itself apart due to thrust - its an issue I am dealing with.

I don\'t know how much it weighs, as soon as someone tells me, i will update that info :)

Fly however you want, even if you just go straight up - all I want you to do is to fly it and go as fast as possible.

So far we have 2 documented attempts at flight (in order of altitude reached):

1.st Earthpulse

2.nd Thordan Ssoa

I\'d recommend looking at the old stock SRBs. They\'ve been changed and are now spectacularly powered, I.e. you can get into a kerbin escape trajectory with seven of them, and a sun escape trajectory with maybe 14 more, without even steering the rocket from vertical orientation on launch.

This is one of the reasons I am really pleased with the rebalancing of the game. I\'m starting to build rockets with solid 1st and 2nd stages, as you can pretty easily get into orbit with those. Infact with a 3 stage solid booster rocket, I accidently hit an escape trajectory first attempt!

OMG, they are way to overpowered now, this is probably a bug.

I decided to give it a try, came back with some mixed results. Had an issue with the rocket exploding on the pad before firing the first stage. Raised the rocket slightly higher and no more issues. Just don\'t ask me to put this behemoth in orbit.

Wow, Thordan, I am really impressed that you actually managed to film the launch of the rocket from your computer 0.0 I think one thing I did notice was that your top-most engines cut out causing the rocket to lose a third of its thrust and destabilizing it - or it might have been the lag creating an optical illusion.

But it seems that Earthpulse has gone the furthest so far, congratulations :D So far.

I will modifiy the inside of the rocket slightly and see if the inherent issue of tearing itself apart can be solved.
