I'm fairly sure that rendezvous and docking missions have to be launched separately from Kerbin.

Yes, I do believe that they both have to start out as separate launches. The contract text isn't clear but I understand their reasoning. If you could simply undock a lander from your mothership to complete the contract then you didn't really rendezvous and the contract would be easy to cheat.

As for control on both ships - I would assume that to be needed as well. Since they need to be different launches you'll probably need to have it anyway.

Well that's silly, I just landed half of this thing and did a rendezvous, you'd think we could keep track of state changes or moving out of physics range or something to prevent "undocking a ladder" situations.

E: Probably a bit harsh there. Just disappointed.

Yea. I've been a bit frustrated when I wanted to combine a Mun landing contract with a Mun orbit rendezvous contract, but can't launch them Apollo style and complete both. I'm still waiting for a lot of contract packs to be updated for 1.2 then I can really take advantage of my space program.
