Framerates i5 4690 Integrated GPU

Recommended Posts

Starting KSP, loading a random save and centering the view on the KSP gives me about 17-27 fps (full screen no launch options). The main menu runs at around 60fps on my i5-4690 (@ 3.5GHz) machine with 16GB RAM and an ubuntu distribution.

Since I do not have any external video card but I am using the integrated Haswell chipset, I am seriously wondering, whether that's "all I can get"? I mean, 4x3.5 GHz isn't such a bad CPU, and I am tempted to say that there should be some tweaks and tricks which make the graphic experience better than what I am achieving right now.

Anybody having some ideas?

I run a i5 4690k overclocked to 4.5 Ghz and I'm getting 16fps on the KSC main view. I do have the delta time setting at .03 (all the way to the left) so everything is still buttery smooth and in real time. I also have Scatter on and Distant object, so I'd say your getting the highest frame rates you can get short of decreasing more settings; speaking of which what are they for you with those frame rates

Have you tried adjusting the ocean subdivision settings?  Search the settings.cfg file for the word "ocean" and change the maxSubdivison values to a lower number (e.g. try 2 first).  Assuming you are using the Low terrain detail setting then you should only need to change the first 3 occurrences.

		PLANET
		{
			name = KerbinOcean
			minDistance = 4
			minSubdivision = 1
			maxSubdivision = 6   <--- Change this to 2
		}

...and the same for EveOcean and LaytheOcean in the Low section.

This will make your ocean behave a bit weird.  Floating vessels may appear to be slightly above or below the water surface but, unless you're deliberately building boats then this shouldn't bother you too much...

Well, the clock speed doesn't tell you much about how good a CPU is and even if it is good, it doesn't mean that the integrated GPU has to be good or fast too. Most AMD APUs are much worse CPUs yet their GPUs are much better than their Intel counterparts. But they are still worse than dedicated entry level graphics cards when it comes to gaming.

Well, the graphic settings are more on the upper end, than on the lower end, but here they are:

Terrain Detail High

Terrain Scatters 50%

Render Quality Fantastic

Texture Quality Full Res

Surface, Underwater, Highlight FX all on

Screen Resolution 1920x1080, Full screen

Anti-Aliasing 8x (doesn't really seem to affect the frame rate though)

V-Sync Every V-Blank (doesn't really seem to affect the frame rate though)

Pixel Light Count 8 (lights really hit the performance, so you gotta tune between crash-landing at night and slide show :wink: )

Shadow Cascades 4

Turning down the screen resolution to 1280x720 does not increase the frame rate (at least that did help back when I was young)

Going down with both, texture and render quality does the trick - at least when watching the space center, I get a solid 60fps. However, once you observer your 400+ part monstrosity your back down to 20fps (instead of 15-17fps). So yeah, I guess there's something to gain then...

The maximum Delta Time per Frame is kind of a thing. Tuning it to high values makes your game run real time, tuning it to low values turns your clock all yellow and you pass 2 seconds UTC per 1 second in-game. While this does increase the frame-rate per in-game second, it stretches your ingame-second effectively compensating any gain in frame rate.

Yup. If you turn things down more you might be able to see that monstrosity with more frames, but if you really want to see a change get at least an entry level dedicated graphics card to take some load off your cpu IMO. Yeah delta time sets how long the game has to calculate everything before slowing down time, so giving it more time will give you more fps too.
