I'm trying to be naughty. How do I do it? Lol

Recommended Posts

So I saw @Munbro Kerman's SLS. He used like 4 or 6 orange tanks around a structural piece or something to make it look like a 3.75m NASA orange tank. I wanted to build a Delta IV like that.

So I took it to the launch pad and it had a kraken attack. It wiggled and wobbled like crazy and then exploded. I am absolutely 100% sure this is because of the clipping. I'm also sure that there is a way to make it work. FYI, every part is auto-strutted. I haven't touched rigid attachment though I doubt that would work. I can provide download if needed.

But I got this rocket to work. Yay! Took 27 tons to LKO. Awesome! Lets build the config with two SRBs and the all important Delta IV heavy! But whenever I launch the 2 SRBs, (isn't that 4,2? well more like 3.75, 2 lol) I launch it and 5 seconds in, it explodes. The D-IV heavy just blows up on the launch pad. So I know I'm doing something wrong, Can anyone with experience in being naughty in this field help? Thanks.

Well, the way I do it will probably be how almost everyone else does it. So, what I do is prepare something that is 3.75 m above where I want the orange to be (any 3.75 meter fuel tank will do). Like this:

Then you will want to bring out the orange tank and use 6x symmetry (8x works well too, but you will have more fuel which will add more weight, and you will have more parts, etc.). Don't use cubic struts! Like this:

Using offset, you can bring the tanks in to be flush with the 3.75 meter fuel tank that is above:

To prevent your shiny new orange tank to "jellify" on launch, we need to add struts. I find the best places to place struts are at the very bottom of the orange tank and at the top, where the orange tank meets with the white tank.

Sorry about this one; you can't see the struts very well, but they're there.

That's it! Now if you want to attach an engine to the bottom, I would either put it on first, then put the orange tanks on, or, offset the fuel tanks up so they don't interfere with having the engine snap in place (like this)

If you want to use a decoupler, I would just use the 3.75 meter one and use the same tactic to put it on.

Now, using this method, I am able to create a large scale Delta IV Heavy:

Awesome! Thanks for the help. I'll try to build it again later. :)
