Jump the SPH!

Recommended Posts

Side note: This is purely for fun. there is no logical purpose for this.

But now, ON TO THE CHALLENGE!

Make a ramp (and vehicle!) that can jump over the ENTIRE SPH and survive.

RULES:

1: It must be long ways.

2: It ALL must be mobile (as in on wheels) until it gets over to the SPH.

3: Your vehicle CANNOT weigh more than 0.5 tons.

4: You cannot copy others successful creations.

5: You must have video or picture evidence you successfully completed it.

PRIVILEGES:

1: Your vehicle MAY have rocket engines on it that can be used for the jump.

SUB-RULES FOR THIS PRIVILEGE:

1A: Your craft may not hold more than two Oscar-B fuel tanks worth of fuel by the time is leaves the ramps edge.

1B: Your engines can't be more powerful then a single Spark engine.

2: Your vehicle MAY have Junos on it (as long as their thrust is dialed down.

3: Your vehicle MAY have aircraft un-powered landing gear for extreme speeds.

WINNERS:

@Nicole

@Eidahlil

With that out of the way, the very last rule: HAVE FUN!

So I tried and tried and couldn't make a workable ramp for my 0.5t craft. The wheels are just too small and clip into the ramp at any reasonable speed. I suspect you did not actually meant a 0.5t craft, as two Oscar-B and a Spark are already 0.55t, and 4 M1 wheels are 0.3t without anything else. But I decided to just roll with it and use the edge of the runway as the ramp.

I never said it was a good decision. I cannot hit it at more than about 35 m/s without exploding, and that's too low to 'jump' over anything, but that 'Spark' engine is a beast, I could probably make orbit with it. So I kind of ended up flying over the SPH, not jumping.

Anyway, to at least comply with the FUN rule, here's a video with explosions. :)

Yes wheels gave me problems too, they are no good technology! I might as well share my attempt here, it starts at 2:16 in this video:

The reaction wheel is part of it because none of the other parts can be root parts, no other reason. :P

A half ton total craft limit? That's pretty draconian.

You can, in fact, hit orbit on 2 Oscar-Bs and a Spark, but you can't do so pushing a command seat & kerbal.

Regarding rule 2, what should the thrust limiter for the Junos be? I'll probably be trying this very, very, soon.

25%

Congratulations on your car design, @Eidahlil. You've been added to the winners list. Your design would be disqualified for not jumping the correct way, but since you jumped over the entire space center, I'll let it slide.
