The Hyperactive Hyperdrive

Sir, we have confirmation! And the Invasion of this forum has begun!!! Muahahahahha! May all be subjected to my near-impossible ideas!

The challenge: Build a spacecraft that can go to every body in the solar system land on every SOLID body... Then escape the solar system (never to return).

Points:

Moho- 10

Eve, Gilly- 35

Kerbin (freebie), Mun, Minmus- 10

Duna, Ike- 40

Dres- 30

Jool, Laythe, Vall, Tyo, Bop, Pol- 140

Eeloo- 70

Crashing into the Sun/ Jool- 100 points

Escaping the solar system- 40 points

going 1/3 of the speed of light- 333.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333... points

2/3- 666.6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666... points

3/3 999.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999... eh we'll call it 1000 points

Colonies on all planets- 300 points

Mining/refueling stations on all planets- 400 points

And last but not least: Spacestations- 1000 points

DA RULEZ:

THOU SHALT NOT USE CHEATS, MODS, OR HACKS!!! (no mechjeb either)

Thou shalt not have refuling missions!

The thou mayests:

You may use a ship that is assembled in orbit (i.e: a space station that can fly... this is the only exception to rule 2)

You can send unmanned probes to each body... -1 point for every one though.

Ship may be as big as you want it (yay)

Yes I will be doing this challenge too.

The prize: Very serious bragging rights. And maybe something else if I think of it.

And considering myself... and a lot of other people. I think we can pull this one off.

Hmmm.... A quick look at the rocket equation says that an Ion drive ship in KSP won't get more than 33.8km/s delta V, so yeah.........

4200g  * ln(0.938/0.413) = 33,787m/s. (0.00011c)

That's for just the 1.25m fuel tank, but add enough (a near infinite number) to your pod and engine and batteries, you'll get towards that.  So, regret to inform you that your challenge is actually impossible with stock craft.

That being said, if you can clip a craft through a planet you could get some absurdly fast slingshots judging from this Danny2462 video:

Could we see your attempt at this?

Especially the "get to fraction of the speed of light" part, which is downright impossible without any mod or cheat.

Why not a full on Ion burn at the lowest possible periapsis orbiting the Sun? Or maybe even Jool?

I'm going to try this myself... Could take A LONG time though... I'm an insane person, so I think of crazy things

And the fraction speed of light thing is more of a joke. (The title) However a Gravity assist could work.

The speed of light is ~300,000,000 m/s. Onethird if that is 100,000,000 m/s.

The upper limit of DV achievable with ion is about ~35,000 m/s if I remember right (mathematically proven and all, search the forum).

Soooo even with the perfect Ion spacecraft (implies no payload at all, whick is rather unrealistic), you would be about 99,965,000 m/s DV short.

Feel free to try...

What about the speed at the periapsis?

Speed at PE would be highly dependent on difference between PE and AP.

In any case the MAXIMUM possible speed you would have at PE would be 94,672.01 m/s, which is the escape velocity for Kerbol.

Let's see, ~35,000 + ~95,000 = 130,000 m/s.

You are still 99,870,000 m/s DV short.

No.

Does the Sun bend light going around it in any noticeable manner? Same for your craft, if you seek to reach large fractions of c the Sun might as well not be there it won't change anything (unless you try going through it).

Light is really really fast, the fastest thing we got was Helios reaching about 70km/s at Sun periapsis lower than Mercury's orbit. That's 0.0002c. The escape velocity at the surface of the Sun is 620km/s, about 0.002c. To reach speeds comparable to the speed of light around the Sun you'd have to get within a few Schwarzschild radii of its centre which is about 3km. Since the Sun is not a point (we'd have other issues if it was) it's impossible.

Great responses. Such a shame though. Would be cool to hit lightspeed or even 1/100 of it. Just a thought I had.

It is possible if you cheat. Or if you use some "future tech" mods.

But speed of light (or even a fraction of it) is out of reach in stock.

Just like is in real life, actually

I think we need to find a way to bend the rules.
