I found this documentary where Wernher von Braun explains his plan to reach the Moon, followed by a mock-up of the entire flight.

It's really, really interesting. The way they thought the future would be like is very different from how it is. Very Fallout-y.

 

I might try to recreate this in KSP. But I don't know.
