RAM usage difference Win7/Win10

Hi,

i noticed some strange behaviour with KSP under WIN7 (work pc) and 10 (home pc), both time KSP x64

The game is played on 2 different PCs with similar mod list with WIN10 PC using way more mods, specially stuff like EVE and part mods.

On work pc the game uses around 3gb after loading,  up to 6gb of RAM after playing some time and crashes because the PC has only 8gb .

On home pc the game uses after loading around 2.5gb and then goes slowly up to 5-7gb. Then it drops back down to 2.5gb . This PC has 12gb of RAM.

Is the WIN10 so much better for KSP ? Or why does it uses way more RAM on WIN 7 ?

her a screen after playing for around 2h:

home PC

i-7 860 , Radeon 5860, 12GB RAM, WIN10

I'm actually starting to lean in the direction of win10 being much better at running KSP

I recently did an OS flush (factory reset) and had to drop back to win8.1 ... KSP runs like molasses in winter on 8.1 compared to win10

I hate to say it but MS actually might have done something right for once

Since I installed windows 10 (I did not upgrade from win7 but did a clean install) I noticed much better performance in games overall. Not only in games but use applications also, things like browsing and so on became much more responsive. Also, I noticed in terms of memory management, windows 10 is much better then 7. While windows 10 can be a bit more "heavy" on the hardware, the way the OS handles memory is much better.

I remember sometimes windows 7 after prolong use (not only with ksp but other stuff too) the memory available was hard to to increase, while in windows 10 after prolong use, the free memory increases as soon the OS becomes idle.

Independent of the conspiracy theories of spying by microsoft and the US gov and crap like that, (and there is no doubt that win10 is a huge spyware lol) the base OS is much faster.

So, yea, windows 10 all the way, even if running a older PC like a dual core or something similar.

I know we all like to knock Windoze but Windows 10 is actually pretty good.

It's usually not a good idea to upgrade your version of Windows as later versions have traditionally sucked up much more resources. Not so with Windows 10. I have a little 5 year old netbook PC and it has been revitalised by changing to Windows 10 on it.

Principially yes, until MS automatically restarts your PC to install one of their bugged patches that break something. Or stuff like DVR, which was deliberat, yet still broke a bunch of stuff and was overly complicate to deactivate.

Also still carries some of those shizophrenic double-interface from W8, besides the privacy issues.

"Similar mod list" is troublesome. Can you retest with an identical install on each? I.e. same KSP version, same mod list with same mod versions.

Ok... tested now at home with the copy from work. Same RAM usage, no difference. So it seems an addon makes problems, as on that KSP version i use waaaayyy less addons (specialy part mods/grafic mods) then on my normal KSP version.

Found also some errors in the log, but i don't think they cause the problems.

Just for comparision.

You have some memory-heavy mods in your home install: Stock Visual Enhancements and B9 Aerospace are two that jump out at me.

Might be best to start with your work install and add the other mods one or two at a time to find the biggest offenders.

the work one uses around 600mb MORE after loading a savegame ::)

Thats the fun part^^

*edit*

just to clarify :

initial thread post was about win10 vs win7 , why on win10 i can use more mods then on win7 .

I now took the copy of the win7 version to my win10 and have the same RAM usage. So its not the windows version that makes the difference but it seems a mod uses all the ram^^
