Trouble recovering science data from lander pod

Recommended Posts

This is my first post on the Forums. I've been playing KSP at low duty cycle for about a year. I have learned a lot from reading the Forums.

I have read the Forum FAQ and searched the Forums for the issue 'recover science', but didn't find anything that helped with my problem. My apologies if I overlooked an existing answer.

I'm playing 1.2.2, no mods, and (in case it matters) the Astronaut Center is at Level 2. I have about 1/3 of the tech tree unlocked.

Here's the scenario. It's a single-Kerbal Apollo-style Mun mission. I had Jerbin in a Lander Can on the Mun, with a couple of temperature sensors. I've collected some EVA and crew reports, and some temperature readings. I've launched the Lander Can back into low Mun orbit, where there is an empty capsule waiting with enough fuel for the return trip. I don't have a docking port unlocked, so Jerbin has to EVA between the two vessels.

Here's the issue: How do I get the science data from the Lander Can back to home so I get credit for it?

Simply moving Jerbin to the capsule by an EVA doesn't do it. The data stays in the Lander Can. I understand that. I just don't know how to fix it.

I've found instructions on the Forum and the internet that say to EVA near the science instrument and then right-click on it and a "recover data" option will be in the pop-up window.  The problem is, I can't make that work. When I have Jerbin on an EVA near the temperature sensor, or near the Lander Can, and then right-click, nothing happens. No window appears, so there's no "recover data" option I can click on.

Hopefully that's enough info for starters. Hopefully what I'm trying to do is possible.

Thanks for your help.

Um. Your words are very confusing. To get as far as you have, you must understand how to make context menus work -- and yet you are saying that in this last step, you get no context menus???

For the lander can, it's definitely easiest to do on the ladder. So EVA onto the ladder, right click on the lander can to open its context menu. It will have perhaps two buttons, and one of them will say "Take Data (15)" (or some number). That's the one you want.

You have to float very near to a thermometer to gather its data. (If you were clever, and put the thermometer next to the ladder, then you can just climb close to it.) When you are floating next to the ship, right click on the thermometer to open the context menu of the thermometer. It will probably have 3 buttons: Toggle Display, Log Temperature, and Review Data (it might also have Aim Camera). When you climb or use your RCS jetpack to get very close to the thermometer, suddenly another button will appear: "Take Data" -- again, that's the one you want.

When you click the Take Data button, the experiments are transferred from the science device or storage container to Jerbin. A Kerbal can carry an infinite number of experiments when on EVA. So you load all the experiments into the Kerbonaut's pockets, and then the Kerbonaut flies off to the other command module to return to Kerbin. When Jerbin boards the new vessel, all the experiments will be removed from Jerbin's pockets and stored in the new vessel's pod.

First, thanks for your reply.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I know how to use the context menus -  that's how I collected the EVA and temperature reports.

When I EVA immediately next to the temperature sensor on the outside of the lander can and right-click on the sensor, it highlights in green but no context menu appears at all. Same for being on an EVA and holding onto the lander can's ladder - when I right-click on the lander can, no context menu appears.

What you describe (about the 3 buttons) isn't happening for me.

Sounds crazy, so I'm probably doing something wrong, I just don't know what.

I'll post an image of the situation when I'm back at that computer.

Did you get your copy of the game from Steam? If so, have you verified your download? Perhaps you are doing something wrong, but what you are describing should be impossible -- which also implies a possible corrupted game download.

Yes, from Steam. The computer has Windows 10.  I'll verify the integrity tonight and report back.

Nothing else in the game doesn't work, so I'm puzzled.

Update: "One file failed to validate and will be reacquired". It didn't say which one.

Started KSP, and now it's working, I get the context menu with the "take data" option now - doing the same procedure I used previously.

Thanks much for your help!
