Mining questions?

Recommended Posts

I start my first mining operation on mun and i have couple questions so first of all my stationary miner and driveble tanker car are close to my mun base. Mun equatorial area. I scan mun and area is not rich with resources but i still get lots of fuel about 2 months more than enough to refuel my lander several times so is it nessassary to mining only areas with rich resources? And second mun is kind of poodle i try to build miner whitch can take fuel to mun orbit to stations/ships and land back to surface to mine more but it take so much fuel to go orbit and land and bigger i make my miner landing comes more diffucult also mun terrain is horrible:huh: so is mimus more easier and lucrative to mine than mun?

Yes,  it's perfectly feasible to mine lower concentration patches of ore.  With a couple big drills, an engineer and big ISRU you can refill very quickly even at lower concentrations.   Plus time is pretty much a free resource.   The one caution is that the smaller drills don't work at below 3.5% ore(I think).

Minmus is generally easier to get from surface to orbit,  due to the lower gravity.   But it's s little more time and effort to get back and forth to Kerbin. Eventually you'll probably want mining operations on both.

Also, it takes a lot more fuel to explore the Mun. So it is good to make the fuel there so that you can use it there. If you want to get more fuel to orbit, then you need to use the more efficient nuclear engines.

I also found the nukes to be underpowered and fuel management was taking out some of my fun, yet I didn't want to enable unlimited fuel cheat, because refueling ships is fun. If you don't mind editing some simple files, you can change engine's specs. Although, that would be considered cheating, for sure. But after playing KSP for so long I got bored of waiting for simple orbital maneuvers and hacked some of the engines that I use often.

I only use nukes for interplanetary travel. I found the Terrier and the Poodle adequate for landing on the Mun and Minimus.

there is no such thing as "Cheating" on a multiplayer sandbox :P. The game is what you make it. If squad didn't want us messing with engines specs, why make it so easy to do so in the first place?

True. That's why I don't mind, it made the game much more enjoyable for me, but some people are very strict and get upset at the slightest suggestion of editing the standard game files* :)  As a bonus, this allows me to build vessels with fewer parts. I modded batteries and solar panels too (x2) so I need less of them for each ship.

* not just KSP, most games, there are always some vocal purists, I personally enjoy messing around with game cfgs.

PS. I think you meant single player sandbox. Cheating in multiplayer sandbox would be bad:) Like cheating in Elite Dangerous.

No Sandbox is complete without the bully tossing sand in everyone's face. :sticktongue:
