Command Chair in Service Bay?

Recommended Posts

OK,

I'm trying to build a Tellumo to orbit vehicle.    To those of you that haven't got Galileo planets pack, think of Eve, but with an oxygen atmosphere and vegetation.    Very pretty it is too, but the challenge of getting out of that gravity well justifies extreme measures.   Mark 1 cockpits get too hot, and mk2 and 3 are just too heavy and draggy.

So for the first time I'm resorting to putting a command chair inside a mk1 bay.

Is there a way to do this that doesn't result in body horror/nightmare fuel/invoke the kraken when clicking the "leave seat" button?

Anyone got a finished subassembly?

I've tried mounting the seat so the head end faces out the open hatch, but i think the helmet gets stuck on the rim.    I'm positioning the seat as far back as possible without any of the tubing it is built out of clipping through the rear walls or floor of the bay.   When seated, nothing pokes outside.

Has done it from Eve and it works well, I put two octagonal struts close to one of the solid walls then seat on this so kerbal lies down looking upward,
This looks good and realistic and generate minimal clipping, 1.25 m fairing in front, this hold 0.625 meter probe and reaction wheel, power, mechjeb, antenna even an solar panel.
Benefit is that its hard to overheat and you can drop the fairing once out of atmospheric heating to reduce weight and you store the system out of drag. and heating.

Kerbal will spawn outside seat and might kick the ship away, not kraken stuff but it might well get the ship up to 10 m/s or kick it over on ground.
Simple to test on pad to see if it makes any problem, if your craft is an plane it should not cause any problems as they are hard to tip over.
Not an issue for me as kerbal landed in an rover and used the rocket to get out.
