Not easy to make a craft that can fly from the surface of Eve back to Kerbin. 

Would it not have saved a bit of mass to have aero-braked at Eve?

The vessel wasn't built for that, the only working engine left would've burned for sure.
Aerobraking is a very risky maneuver and should be avoided if possible. I had enough in the tanks to do a normal insertion.
