Fireball XL5 to Mun and back

Scarecrow

Recommended Posts

I recently created a replica of Fireball XL5, from the early 1960s puppet show, and thought I would fly it to Mun and back, just because.

If anyone is interested, a description and craft download file is available over in the Spacecraft Exchange thread

The video of this mission was  captured in a single take and rendered at 10x actual speed, so lasts for a smidgeon over 4 minutes.

Very Very nice!

I attempted the same back in .25  - very fun but frustrating at the time (The addition of the spaceplane tanks helps for sure)

A few comical points...

1) I kindly suggest the following replacement soundtrack

2) Where are the rocket bikes? I need my rocket bike.

3) Check out the kerbal modification cheat to rename your crew to Steve, Venus and Matt

4) Add a 4th crew spot for Robert

Seriously though, I love it!!!!

(Fireball XL5 remains my earliest television memory)

Thanks Wallygator.  I didn't even think about the rocket bikes, though I did once make a vehicle for getting around Minmus that worked on the same principal, so I'm sure they would be feasible on planets/moons with low gravity.  It was fun putting it together, the difficult bit was to make Fireball Junior and the main body capable of atmospheric flight independently, as well as still being able to fly when they were joined together.

I also tried to use a service bay to house the rocket bikes, although it wasn't totally successful.

Regardless, your mission was well done.  I very much appreciated it.

It actually makes me want to have another go at it, just to see what I can come up with.

Once again, Well done Sir!

EDIT: Sadly I'm on RSS lately, so I need to unlearn what I unlearned to learn again what I need to learn to do it in stock... lol
