Polar Research Challenge

Recommended Posts

As the space program's rocket scientists are busy firing rockets into the cosmos, some with terrified kerbals in the bare bones capsules (a very kerbal thing to do), an intern at R&D suggested focusing on some projects at home for a little while. He was quickly promoted and then moved to the newly born Kerbin Research Department.

Rules

1a. Mods are allowed. Aside from Station Science, all save files must be stock if you choose to upload them.

1b. Kerbin Side is not allowed.

2. Hyperedit is not allowed.

3. Any of the ice shelves on Kerbin are allowed (i.e. Northern & Southern Ice Shelves), but please state if you're in the North or the South.

4. If uploading the save file, you must build the base in either 1.3 or 1.3.1. Corrupted save files will not be judged.

Base Modules

Required

  • Some kind of housing (The Hitchhiker cans are allowed)
  • At least one Mobile Processing Lab
  • Transportation rover (bonus points if it can transport liquid fuel)
  • Power generation
  • Power storage (unless within 5 kilometers of the South/North Pole, must be marked with a flag)
  • Be outside of the plane (mobile bases are allowed)

Optional

  • Mining center
  • Fuel storage
  • Some kind of runway, even if it is marked by a single flag
  • Docking system
  • Power storage (unless within 6 kilometers or more of the South/North Pole)

Notice: Save files are NOT required. Not necessarily prohibited, and in fact encouraged, but save files are NOT required.

Required Screenshots (if not uploading the save file)

  • All of (if multiple) the planes/rockets to be used (rockets must detach the engine(s) and recover said engine(s) in the Tracking Station. Same goes for fuel, if radially attached)
  • ONLY the first payloads flight
  • Every payload once added
  • ONLY ONE plane at the base
  • The finished product

Bonus points for submissions posted to YouTube (can be real time, or can be edited)

Judging Criteria (if uploading the save file)

  • Size
  • Crew capacity
  • (Unofficial) Framerate
  • Delivery method
  • Ease of transportation for kerbals (transportation of resources will not be judged)
  • Power generation rate
  • Amount of electrical charge stored

EDIT: I'm still new to the forums, so my content will need to be approved. It may take a while for "me" to respond

Can the base be mobile and self-propelled?

For example, if I fly a transport plane that has a passenger cabin, a lab in the cargo bay, some batteries and solar panels, a docking port, and carries a rover, and park that plane on the polar cap, does that count as a base for the purpose of this challenge?

Edit: the OP edited their post to answer my question.

Hmm... Yet another challenge incentivizing the construction of a massive electric cargo plane..

I might try and colonize the southern iceberg rather than the South pole though.
