Is there a way to remove space debris?

Recommended Posts

I have a lot of spent rocket stages in permanent Kerbin orbit, and even a handful that have been ejected from Kerbin orbit and are now orbiting Kerbol. It's starting to really drag on my system, and it makes maneuvering in the orbital map near Kerbin challenging at times. Is there any way to clear these things out? It's kind of cool to have orbital debris to attempt to fly to/around, but it becomes a real swarm all too quickly.

Thanks for any insight you might have.

There are three ways to do that:

1. Delete your KSP/saves/default/persistent.sfs file to remove all the vessels, or edit it manually to remove only some of them.

2. Switch to debris clicking its icon in Map View, and choose End Flight.

3. Or build a killer ship equipped with some kind of weapons (look for them in Addons section), and just shoot debris down.

Thanks for your reply. In my experience, though, Option (2) is only possible if there's still a Kerbal aboard; the menu that includes "End Flight" doesn't even come up otherwise. Is that true? Or am I doing it wrong?

You can click any vessel in the Map View (not the Tracking Station! That one lists controllable vessels only!), even a decoupled fuel tank. Then press <ESC>, then End Flight...

I've been playing (and thoroughly enjoying!) KSP for about five days and have made quite a few 'beginner' ships that have left a lot of space debris. Is there a way (without mods) to 'restart' my universe? I figured I could always just uninstall and then reinstall, but that seems a bit extreme. Any other ways?

Thanks!

To remove objects that are debris you can simply change the settings in ksp called "Max Persistent Debris" to 0

This will not remove any controllable ships that you might have in orbit. Do completely reset your universe you can delete the file called persistant.sfs.

To find it navigate from your KSP folder to saves , to default.

As a bonus this will not delete your saved ship designs. If you also want to remove your ship design they are stored in KSP/ships/ and then either SPH or VAB (space plane hanger or vehicle assembly building)

Forgive me for the thread necro - but this is relevant to my interests:

If I set persistent debris to 0, will that affect any flags I plop down? I really don't want to loose my flags...

You shouldn't lose any flags as they are not classified as debris.

Cheers!
