Hello! Am I attempting the impossible?

So, I'm new to all this, of course- but I want to know if something's possible. I found a lunar lander mod (Munar lander?) and want to know- is it possible to make a ship that has _TWO_ controllable portions? i.e. lets you use the [ or ] keys (Which I know know what they do, finally...) to shift between two -functional- units, or is it impossible?

barring the mods, use this idea; a rocket that launches into two independent stages that can be fired in different directions.

Do I just not understand the mechanics enough yet?

Nope, not possible right now. you can have only one cockpit per ship. you can launch a craft off a parent craft, but the smaller craft will be the one with the control. The parent will just go off and crash somewhere.

There is this plugin:

It lets you place several unmanned 1 person crew pods on your rocket. You can then EVA a kerbal, enter one of these pods and decouple it (along with some fuel tanks and engines hopefully) from the main ship. You can then control this 'sub-ship' and the original ship separately. What you CAN'T do is join them back together again, unfortunately. Also, the 'sub-ship' can't have any staging, so no decouplers, parachutes and the like...

It allows remote control (you don't need Kerbals) of anything you put the appropriate part on. As far as I know you could have a part on each stage and assuming you have a proper command network setup than you are good to go.
