Kerbal Ladder and Jumping Bugs?

Recommended Posts

Just noticed my Kerbals can't climb all the way up the Kelus Mobility Enhancer (the largest extendable ladder).  Their little green noggins seem to be coming into contact with parts of the ladder and they can't enter the craft.  If the ladder is mounted a reasonable distance from the fuselage, the Kerbal somehow is getting nudged-inward as they climb.  Seems like some sort of ladder collider issue?

Anyone else notice this?

[edit]  After testing a bit, this one might just be related to the Mk3 Shuttle Cockpit that I have the ladder on.  Seems like it has to be mounted an unusually far away distance from the flat surface for kerbals to make their way up the ladder.  Apparently what happens is as the kerbal climbs the ladder, when they get close to the ladder area on the Mk3 Shuttle, they get pulled or nudged-in toward the shuttle cockpit and can't continue up the ladder!

I also noticed kerbals are not jumping the same way they used to on Kerbin.  I had a craft or two that maybe required a little jump to reach a ladder and the kerbals now seem glued to runway when spacebar is used to "jump".  This behavior was actually noted in the Mission Builder when testing a mission.  If I try jumping with a kerbal in a sandbox game, they seem to do fine?  So maybe specific to Mission Builder only?

Well, they did remodel the Kerbals for 1.5 - it would not be surprising at all if it turns out the new and improved kerbals have ended up with a different (bigger?) collision mesh than the 'old kerbals.

That would explain why they now invisibly hit parts sooner than before.

The heads show the same using Collide-o-scope, 1.5 same as 1.3,
and a craft that I had from 1.3.1 with a tight-fit Kerbal access path works in 1.5.

The longer extendable ladder has always had an annoying bump, around the box it folds into, which pushes Kerbals out a bit from where they are lower on the ladder.
The Kerbal needs to get closer to the craft to reach surface-recessed ladder built into the cockpit.  There is a transition zone where the ladders (extendable and built-in) overlap, where the Kerbal goes to the half-way distance from the craft, and often cannot quite make it over the bump around the extendable ladder box.

I do suspect the issue predates the 1.5 update...

The problem I have is related somewhat to that noticeable bump you speak of.  The issue however is that bump in conjunction with kerbal interaction with the built-in ladder area on the Mk3 Cockpit.  The bump, the kerbal can typically overcome.  ...and the bump is not an issue if mounted on the flat side of a Mk3 passenger unit for instance.

However, when you put one of these ladders on the midpoint of the built-in Mk3 ladder area, the kerbal tries to interact with the underlying Mk3 ladder as it climbs and gets pulled in closer while still on the extension ladder.  Then when it gets to that bump, the kerbal gets stuck on the bump that usually isn't a problem.  Right now, I'm working around it by not using that ladder.  I went with the smaller one and put it at the bottom of the Mk3 Cockpit ladder zone to avoid the issue.

Only problem with this workaround so far is that it requires the kerbals to jump to reach the ladder.  Which is OK, however I noticed that kerbal jumping seems bugged in Mission Builder when you try to test your mission at the KSC.  The kerbals don't leave the KSC runway when you spacebar-jump.

Moving to Technical Support.

If you think you've found a bug... did you file a bug on the KSP bug tracker? That's the best way to make sure that someone at squad sees it.

I have several posted to bugtracker… but typically, I search and ask around to see if anyone else sees it as an issue before taking the next step.  I search over there too, but sometimes folks can point me to the bugtracker item they already posted and I would then just add appropriate comments and upvote it.
