Hab Modules- landed or Transported?

For those who are planting 'hab modules' do you actually fly them to the target, or do you just send 'supply missions' there with 'building materials' and then transport the finished product there? I've been trying to land several reasonable, somewhat aerodynamically sound designs on the Mun, but can never get them out of atmosphere because the rockets 1.) become mysteriously unstable 2.) can't lift their own weight or 3.) fall apart on the pad/midflight!

Any advice on how to build a heavy-lifter that can get a simple hab module (a single 2x2 module from this mod pack [with necessary 'fixins']: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/6280-0-16-ExPI-Space-Stations-0-4-Interplanetary-Probes-WIP) to the Mun is appreciated.

Are you using a copious amount of struts?

A copious amount of struts is the best amount of struts.

Anyway, make sure to use lots of solid fuel boosters for your initial ascent (0 to 5000 meters).

That's how I'm going to get my Munbase up there.

Look up Torus HAB Mk I in the Ships section. It's a great Mun habitation base, and is able to (barely) make it to Mun with responsible Delta V usage. Has 3 habitation modules for up to 15 Kerbals. A blast to operate it with the Kethane mod, I use it as my Kethane main base where everything gets converted/distributed to ships that are making the hop to Minmus that don't already have the fuel load from liftoff to do it.
