A slower descent is more predictable, and gives you more time to prep for your spot. It's ok to glance away to check your potential landing spot, but when navigating down, you use the ball. Otherwise, your current attitude is unlikely to match your viewpoint, and you'll end up over-correcting in the wrong direction.

That's a really cool lander design, but it seems like it would tip over the second it hit the ground.

Did you ever send one of your astronauts to the Mun arch?

It did take a few tries to touch down without tipping. The final attempt I maintained a descent of 4m/s for the last 1000m.
