Stuck in Undeployed Fairing

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I will get straight to the point with this. My lander, lands on Duna, so it needs a heatshield, which is placed underneath the lander, and to protect the lander's instruments from aerodynamic forces, there is an upside-down fairing base on top of the lander attatched by a decoupler, this fairing connects down to the heatshield, concealing the lander within, but the fairing isn't staged. When the parachute is deployed, and the heatshield is dropped, just the bottom of the lander is revealed, still attatched to the fairing base ontop. Once it has slowed down, the lander falls out of the shell, ignites its engines and lands on the surface of Duna. (It basically works the same way as NASA's Mars Polar Lander or Phoenix.)

But when the lander separates from the fairing base, it gets stuck, acting like the fairing is still part of the lander, but is its own seperate piece of debris. I've done some experiments on this, and the only way to free the lander is to deploy or destroy the fairing base that isn't supposed to be deployed nor destroyed.

Same vessel interaction is off, there are no autostruts nor actual struts connecting the two, only the decoupler, instruments still deploy, and landing gear, regardless if they're deployed or retracted, don't have any effect. If the decoupler was a stack separator, it will still fall out, but the lander wouldn't. Sometimes, the lander will shake and jitter around before exploding inside the fairing as if it was part clipping.

I don't remember this problem ever existing until the breaking ground update, and keep in mind that this is on the latest version. (For some reason the URL Insert Image won't accept URL's from Imgur, so I can't provide any pictures currently.)

Just copy/paste the whole link from imgur(in the text area dont try to insert). It will be a lot harder to help without the screenshot.

I cant even get the shield to deploy with the fairing staying intact :P , how did you do that? :D .

Maybe using a second fairing and shift move it somewhere, under maybe.

But then again i have no idea how you even reached the part to let loose the heatshield and leave the fairing intact.

I hope someone can help you more in this :D .

It sounds very much like a relatively recent bug, https://bugs.kerbalspaceprogram.com/issues/21915

If that is the problem causing you trouble, then the workarounds are:
+ After deploying the heat shield, right-click on the fairing and select 'Deploy' so that the fairing separates into pieces, or
+ Quicksave and quickload, F5/F9, or
+ If you are still working in the VAB, change the 'root part' to something below the heat-shield

clarify that the workarounds are either-or

I think he wants the fairing to stay intact.

Making the root part below the heatshield definitly worked, thank you for the helpful advice!

How do you keep the fairing though?

Do you shift move the decoupler or the shield?
