They let the publishers focus more budget on marketing and less on quality of the game for the same sales. There's a reason why pre-order bonuses exist, and it's not because this practice benefits the gamers. It benefits publishers. It'd be nice to have a beta, but I'm not pre-ordering a game for one, and if you care about quality of your games, you shouldn't either. In general, avoid pre-orders when possible. These made sense back in the boxed copy days, when there was a risk they'd run out of copies at the store on the day of release, but in the day of digital distribution, pre-orders are just bad for consumer. Wait until the game is released. Look at some early reviews. If you still think the game is good, buy it then. You can find something to do while it downloads, I promise. Spaceman.Spiff
I think a closed beta a few months out from release might be interesting. A lottery system for people who preordered the game could be how the codes are given out. It would probably help to have community input and bug noticing too.
