help with ship designs

Recommended Posts

I recently figured out this design for my Eagle program.

It is a really big rocket, currently only for one kerbonaut. I am sure there are more efficient and smaller versions of a rocket which also make it on mun and back, but this is the first one working I've built so far. However, it has Mechjeb on it, so if you don't have that I could upload a second version.

The first stage has 4 liquid boosters and 3 solid boosters. Launch them at ~75% thrust until you drop the solid ones, then get thrust to 100%. As soon as this stage is burned out completely start the next one. Only the 3 outer engines will apply thrust as you're high and light enough now. You should be able to get into a circular 200-300km orbit (may be higher) with 75% of the center engine's fuel. Wait for the right moment and then rise your apoapsis until it reaches moon-distance.

You should have 4 small engines (with landing struts) and a small engine right below the capsule now. The 4-engine part is going to be your lander. Extend the landing struts and slow down as much as possible to land (I often use MechJeb to do that). After you landed you should still have ~15-20% fuel left. You could either use that to start you back to space again, or decouple it while it is on moon to have a landing reference for your next missions.

The last thrust-stage should be enough to get into a 30km orbit around the moon, delete the inclination, rise your orbit to a high orbit around Kerbal and finally lower your periapsis until it's negative. Finally decouple the last fuel tanks and open your chute.

Hope my instructions were good enough to follow them and my design suits you. In case of doubts use MechJeb to continue your flight.

Regards

can anyone give me some ship designs for getting to the mun etc? i really can't make anything which doesn't explode:(

Here's my Beryllium cl-Pod..

Hope it serves you well as id did me.. I retired it for its bigger 3 man brother..

-Its Light,Agile and Powerful..

-Needs some getting used to..

-Preferred flight plan is stated in the images..

If you want inspiration then check the space craft exchange, you can examine and download all the rockets there to figure out how work and what tricks they used to work.

Like mine

If you are having problems with ascent then lighten the pay load, if you don't think you will use all the fuel in your injection or lander stage then you should remove some! Also adapt your gravity turn to your staging, Begin the turn when SRBs run out/booster stage runs out, and once above 70km you should wait to apoapsis to raise your periapsis.

For space planes the trick is to not be me, so I won't try to give you advice as you are probably better than me at them.

@CuriousGeorge, if you're past this stage ignore this: I just started building ships today. Anything that wasn't a single booster with a capcom on top exploded. I've learned 3 things that stopped the exploding:

1. Before launching, make sure the stages are in the right order, and that the icons in each stage are where they belong. When you hover over them their 3D counterparts are slightly hilighted.

2. I discovered the yellow symmetry button in the top left of your building window, I clicked it until I had triple symmetry and then I could add 3 boosters symmetrically.

3. Don't detach boosters while they're burning. :P
