Landed rescue?

Recommended Posts

I've done some orbital rescues around Kerbin (thanks to a lot of help from everyone). Now I have a contract to save a Kerbal crash landed on Mun. Does the following still apply for a landed rescue (especially the distance)?

"Contracts to rescue a kerbal.  For these, all you have to do is rendezvous with the target and park next to it (i.e. under 2.3 km) in orbit, then ferry the kerbal across on EVA, as mentioned above." (thanks bewing!)

I ask because Sigton crashed in a terrible place on the Mun's north polar area and flat landing spots are not exactly "walking distance" for him.

Yeah, same deal. You need to get one of your craft within 2.3km of that kerbal in order to activate the kerbal. Once you do that, you use [ ] to focus the kerbal. Then walk or fly the kerbal to the rescue craft at your convenience, fly the kerbal back to kerbin, and rescue as normal.

So, you need to either land or crash something near the kerbal, or fly something low over the kerbal's head. If you use the "fly" technique, then after focusing the kerbal, you probably want to switch focus back to your craft again -- because the craft is low enough that it will be autodeleted once it goes out of physics range.

Please note that on the Mun it is possible to climb to the top of mountain, take a running jump off the top of it, turn on your RCS jetpack, and then just barely fly to orbit (or a suborbital rendezvous). So if you don't want to land nearby -- there is still a way to complete the contract.

I managed to find a relatively flat landing spot well within the 2.3 km limit...but with a large ridge between the rescue lander and poor Sigton. I jetpacked him to the lander but I beat the crap outta him in the dark, bouncing off just about every terrain feature I could find...EVA lights do not include a "high beam" :sticktongue:. Got him boarded...and did not have the DV to get back to low orbit to refuel.

I've redesigned the lander portion to increase DV and will give it another shot.

Thanks!!!

Well, time to read the fine print of the contract: does it say anything about the condition in which Sigton needs to be returned on Kerbin? Except "alive"?
