MSByrne
Hi, this is my first post but I've been playing KSP for quite a while. In the past I've had reasonable successes with my attempts to get one man rockets to the moon and back and even managed to get a spaceplane there and back a few times, but in my recent attempts to get three man landers up there my designs have been severely short fueled. It seems that no matter how much I alter the designs of my ships, from tall rockets to wide ones and whatever, I only seem to have enough to barely make it into orbit. I basically think I must be doing something very wrong either build or pilot wise. I've attached my latest attempt but I've made a few different designs before and all seem problematic. I was hoping anyone could give me advice on what I could do to sort this issue out? Anything to do with build or piloting or any other way to save some fuel would be greatly appreciated.http://www./?6tfwag7f57mp2ac
Carthaginian
I took me a very big (15 tanks, 5 engines) rocket to get the 3 man pod to the Mun (still not landed it).I wound up using four 'liquid boosters' that use up 3 tanks each and each topped by an SAS... played VERY carefully, it gets me (barely) into orbit. The second stage (same as the boosters with the addition of ASAS and fins) gets me from Kerbal to Mun, with plenty to spare for any orbital tricks I want to do... it could even go to Minmus if fuel was managed carefully. That took me nearly a full month to get working. EndlessWaves
Your staging seems messed up on that version, it's ejecting thousands of litres of full fuel tanks with the small stacks and the small SRBs can never be ignited properly because there's no decoupler to get rid of the stuff attached beneath them. MSByrne
Whoops, apologies, I must have messed up that version, but nevertheless when I have the staging right (or at least so that all the boosters fire when possible) it still doesn't work well... EndlessWaves
Well, I fixed the staging (although didn't touch the rocket itself so boosters are still broke) and then launched it to see where it would run out of fuel.It didn't.That rocket is capable of a mun landing and safe return at full throttle, although it didn't have the DeltaV to get your lander there so I had to land on the central section.Pictures: http://imgur.com/a/7RB3yModified craft file with fixed staging (the boosters do actually work but fire through the attached stack without apparently harming it).It was fairly close but I flew it manually and I'm not the best of pilots so it doesn't have to be absolutely perfect but even if you can't get it back there shouldn't be any problem getting it to the mun. If you're having trouble then it would help to explain how you're launching and flying it. Edited September 10, 2012 by EndlessWaves
