Low orbit rescuee EVA control?

So, I'm pretty new in career mode and I've done a few of these rescue missions already mostly by making a rough orbital rendezvous (I don't match the speed at intercept) and then have my rescue kerbal EVA to the rescuee, get them near the rescuee's hatch, left click it, and have the rescuee on EVA, and bring them both back to the rescue ship one by one. But in one of my recue mission, after I manage to get close to the rescuee, I got a message saying that the rescuee has been accessible and I can EVA them to the rescue ship immediately but I wasn't able to do that again. My suspicion is that I got close enough with the rescuee but I'm not sure.

You gain control of foreign vessels when your own ships (or kerbal) are close, 2 km or less. If you can't EVA my best bet is that the stranded vessel is a mk1 doble seat thingy. You have to manually open the hatch of that one, right clicking in it.

 

Alternatively, some mods have parts with no hatches Did you install any?
