Well, I finally got to the moon today... only to accidentally kill the kerbalnuaght doing an EVA...

Send a rescue team to retrieve the lander.

Always do a quicksave (F5) before doing something. And if you die or something goes wrong you can do F9 to go back.

woo! I went back to the last auto-save. I tried to return to Kerbin but I ran out of fuel during the orbital insertion. Thankfully I was high enough to EVA into orbit. I'm now sending a rescue team

All 5 or 6 of my Mun landings have gone this way. I do everything just fine until my EVA...then somehow I manage to totally foul it up and accidentally kill my kerbalnught. The only successful return I had was an unmanned pod I sent up and brought back. I'm not even messing with Minmus until I can get a couple of safe returned missions.
