KSP not working (Any advice?)

Recommended Posts

(I'm new here btw so if there is anything wrong please tell me) So i haven't played for 3 days and i wanted to finish off a space station however i ran into a huge problem. Upon starting up the game (through steam) the loading screen had Nyan cats, however in the main menu its gone. The problem is when clicking start game and then click resume saved, i wanted to play one of the saves but it wasn't loading, i tried other saves but also didn't work, i wasn't even able to play any scenarios or any tutorial. Another thing is i was able to click through the resume saves menu and open a new one having them stack up. Is there anyway to fix this? I've already tried reloading the game and validating my game using steam.

Very probably the problem is with one of your mods.  A couple of things you can do:

First, it's worth taking a quick look at your log file-- the chance of solving it this way is probably under 50%, but it's quick and easy, so worth a shot.  After exiting KSP:  look in your KSP install folder, and find a file called KSP.log.  Open it in a text editor (like Notepad), and scroll through it looking for error reports (most likely place to see a relevant problem is towards the end of the file).  If there's something that jumps out at you, that might help point the finger at the problem.

Assuming that looking at the log file doesn't help (it often doesn't), then basically your only option is to figure out which mod is causing the problem via a process of elimination.  Dunno how many mods you're running, but even if it's a lot, using a "binary search" technique works pretty quickly.  Basic idea is to try running with only half your mods installed (doesn't matter which half) and then see whether the problem persists.  Whether it does or not will tell you which half of your list of mods contains the problem.  Okay, once you know the "guilty half", try running with half of that installed, and so forth.  Each time you do this, whittle the list down in half, and pretty soon you will have identified the culprit.

Once you know which mod is causing the problem, then you can go find the release thread for that mod (in the Add-on Releases subforum here), and ask your question there-- that's where the experts for that mod will be, so it's where you're likely to find an answer to your problem.

Apparently the nyan cats are coming from Module Manager, it's some kind of easter egg due to 22 February being Cat Day in Japan or something like that  That got me too this morning, usually those appear when Kopernicus has a compatibility issue. They might well be a red herring.

Have you added/updated/removed any mods recently? Are you using the same PC/console you usually do? What mods and versions of those mods are you using, and what version of KSP? Were there any error messages on the load screen? There isn't a lot of information to work with here, if you can reply with a list of mods and versions and your KSP version that would be helpful.

If you're playing through Steam then there's a good chance that you got updated to KSP v1.9 as it released a few days ago- unless you explicitly set it to a different version through the 'Betas' option in Steam. Unfortunately a lot of mods aren't compatible with v1.9 and will break in a variety of ways, often with error messages when loading the game, and this could be the cause of your problem. If KSP in your Steam library doesn't have a version after it in square brackets e.g. Kerbal Space Program [1.8.1], then you're on v1.9 and odds are that's what broke it.

The good news is you can revert to an older KSP version easily through Steam- right click KSP then click 'Properties'. A new window will open with some tabs at the top, click 'Betas' then in the drop down menu that says 'None- opt out of all betas' just pick the version you want e.g. 1.8.1 and it will reinstall the relevant files without touching any mods or save games (although it's a good idea to back them up anyway).

As Snark already said, check the logs for error messages, then try removing mods until you find one that's responsible (and make sure you save a copy of your savegame before you do as removing mods usually leads to spacecraft being erased when the parts they contain disappear). If all else fails, you can try completely reinstalling KSP and then dropping the mods and saved games back in.

ive been using the same PC as always to run KSP, and im using mods like: Air plane plus, north kerbin weaponry, BDarmory, Firespitter and PhysicsRangeExtender. So would the best option for now is to just uninstall the mods untill they are compatible with the latest version?

KSP 1.9.0 has a relatively high borkage-quotient, so I suggest rolling back to 1.8.1 and waiting for the 1.9.<bugfix> release. By that time most of your mods will likely have a 1.9.x compatible update too.
Of course you could remove all your mods if you really want to play 1.9.0, but IMO the broken manoeuvre node editor makes it a bit of a downgrade.

Protip: Copy your KSP install out of the steam directory, then you can update when you want rather than waiting for steam to unexpectedly break your mods and saves.
