Game performance issue

Recommended Posts

My PC specs:

Ryzen 7 3700X

MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus

Sapphire Radeon 5700XT Nitro+

32GB RAM DDR3200

2x 1TB Intel 660p NVME SSDs

I run the game on maximum details at 1440p resolution. A LOT of mods. Idle Windows 10 uses about 6.6 GB of RAM. When KSP is running I use about 30-31 GB of RAM in total.

PC monitoring software shows that I use a little over 10% of CPU at 49 degrees celsius and 15% GPU at 52 degrees celsius. And the game runs at 7 to 18 fps.. I don't understand where the bottleneck is..

Anyone else faced the same issue?

Mods have been known to create various hitching issues.

These include errors and heap management issues that result in world-lock thread waits on various memory operations.

The only way to fix it is to find what mod is doing it and uninstall it.

That value says nothing. KSP uses only one single thread for your current ship. So on a CPU with 16 threads any value above 6% usage could indicate that that's the the bottleneck. Look at the actual thread usage.

Also even with fast RAM, 20 or so GB will become unwieldy.

Remove all mods:
1. Performance is still bad? Great, it's not mod caused. Either you're building HUGE craft in which case it's normal, or you've pushed KSP to its limits. KSP is a lot, but 'optimized' is not one of them.
2. Performance is suddenly good? Whelp, the issue is somewhere in your modded installation. Add them back one by one to find which one causes it, or look through your player.log for exceptions/warnings/errors.

CPU usage % says nothing. KSP doesn't really do multicore so if KSP is going as fast as it can, your CPU will be sitting there thinking "Dude, like, I got more threads if you want?" Unfortunately, that's just how it is.

Edit: Considering your GPU usage and rig, you're probably facing scenario number 2.

Thank you guys!

KSP without mods at max detail and 1440p: 130 - 144 fps with a decent ship that has about 100 parts.

KSP with mods at max detail and 1440p: 7-18 fps with same ship.

BUT! I played with the radeon software and set it to take control over the game's graphics and now I have 40-70 fps for KSP with mods. GPU usage got higher at 40% average..

So those 40-70 fps are ok for me. Game is playable.
