The year is 1939, but everything feels like 1959, and on this year, a brave group of kerbonauts are to shoot for the Mun with the help of hundreds of scientists and engineers. And a cold war seems to be brewing...

The Letters

May 1939

Jeb- Hey Cam, did you get the mail yet?

Camlo- Yes, I'm coming in right now.

J- You know about that training program we applied for, and how it said it would send a letter back to us if we were accepted or not?

C- Yep, I actually think we got the letters.

J- YESS! Finally after 5 weeks! Gimme it!

C- Okay.

*Jeb runs into his room with the letter*

J- NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

C- Huh. wonder what mine says.

*Camlo opens his letter*

C- I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED! YES! WOO! 

PS. I use cheats for most of these missions but hey, it's the story that matters right?

-Chapter 1- 

The "Rigorous" Selection Process

June 1940

Camlo- "Who wants to be first in space?"

Everyone- "ME!"

Gene walks into the room

Gene- "We have made our decision, the first kerbal to leave the atmosphere is.... Camlo Kerman. You will fly on Verne 1 later this year."

Camlo- "WOO!"

Everyone else would moan in disappointment

Gene- " Don't be disappointed. You guys are all gonna have a spaceflight under your belt by 1943. Tegas is going to fly on Verne 2 in around the first quarter of 1941. Desnad shall fly on Verne 3 in Q3 of 1941, and Ludard will fly on Verne 4 in early 1942."

-Chapter 2-

Into the Firing Area

October 9th, 1940

"X minus 1 minute. Clear the firing area, clear the firing area."

 

"X minus 30 seconds."

Camlo would silently pray that the mission would work

"X minus 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Liftoff, we have liftoff!' 

 

Cheers would erupt from the crowd

The capsule would rattle

The rocket would break the sound barrier

1 min later

The booster would separate

Control- "Camlo, is everything in the capsule okay?"

Camlo- "Roger control, everything's going well and i have a beautiful view. Also i literally feel like a feather, like i'm weightless." 

 

Control- "Camlo, what's your altimeter say?"

Camlo- "68, now it's 69, 70 kilometers."

Control- "Camlo, YOU ARE THE FIRST KERBAL IN SPACE!"

Camlo- "YESSS!"

-5 and a half minutes later-

Camlo- "Okay control, starting reentry."

The capsule would rattle again

Camlo - "Why do i feel like i weigh 800 pounds?"

Control- "I think that's the gee forces."

Camlo- "That explains it."

1 minute and 30 seconds later

Camlo- "Chute is out."

30 seconds later

Camlo- "Chute is deployed."

Camlo would get a radio link with the KSS Dykstra

KSS Freedom - "Camlo we're here to pick you up, welcome back explorer!"

Camlo- "Oh boy am I glad to see you."

-Chapter 3-

YEEHAW!

February 4th, 1941

"X minus 1 minute."

Verne 2 was to be launched on a experimental liquid-fuel booster

"X minus 30 seconds."

Tegas would start to giggle in excitement

"X minus 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, ignition, and LIFTOFF!"

"YAHOO!" Tegas would yell. "LET'S GO!"

Soon, the rocket was past the speed of sound and higher up than any plane could get.

"YAHOO!" Tegas would yell again.

The booster would burn up the last of its fuel a few minutes later and separate from the capsule

Control would finally say something,"Tegas, are all systems onboard your craft alright?"

"Oh, I'm better than alright!" Tegas would say

"And my altimeter says my altitude is.. 73 kilometers, I'M IN SPACE!"

-6 minutes later-

"Okay, I'm comin' home control." Tegas would say with a bit of disappointment.

-1 minute later-

"Chute's out." Tegas said

-30 seconds later-

"Chute's deployed." Tegas said

-1 minute later-

"Touchdown!" Tegas said

A few minutes later her capsule was picked up by an army truck

-Chapter 3.5-

April 12, 1941

Intern: "GENE!"

Gene: "What is it?"

Intern: "Sorry to break it to you but back on the 7th the commies launched someone into orbit."

Gene: *Spitting out coffee* "Then tell Wherner we're gonna follow suit."

Intern: "Okay sir, i'll-"

Gene: "AND GET ME MORE COFFEE!"

And so...

-Chapter 4-

Following Suit

June 3rd, 1941

Verne 3 would be the first mission to orbit Kerbin

Desnad would be the one flying this historic mission

Even though he didn't look scared, oh boy was he.

 Control: "X-minus 5 minutes, clear the firing area, clear the firing area."

Desnad began trembling, he could think of a million things that could go wrong.

Control: "X-minus 1 minute."

Control: "X minus 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Fire command, FIRE COMMAND!

The engines roared 

Desnad: "AAAHH!" (this went on for a while)

Control: "Liftoff! Godspeed Desnad!"

Desnad kept on screaming

Control:" Booster separation in 3, 2, 1."

BOOM! was the sound that the explosive bolts made

-1 minute later-

Control: "Main engine cutoff."

The rocket coasted to its apogee

Control: "KOI in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Ignition."

Just when he had calmed back down, Desnad started screaming again.

And just as the burn started, it stopped.

Control: "MECO and capsule separation."

Desnad: "Jesus Khrist that was stressful."

-92 min later-

Control:" Deorbit burn in 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0."

The retro rocket fired for around 30 seconds and then cut off.

-4 min later-

Desnand: "Reentry in just a second, oh no."

The capsule streaked across the sky

-3 min later-

Desnad: "Chute is deployed."

Desnad: "Touchdown!"

Desnad then barfed everything he had ate in the past 2 days

Chapter 5

The Speech

Shortly before the launch of Verne 4, Joseph Franklin Kerman, newly elected president of Kerlin, was scheduled to give a speech on the grounds of Karvard Science center, this is what it said.

"I thank everyone here on these grounds in person or watching on TV for listening today, as I have a very important statement to make to this nation and the world as a whole. For centuries kerbals have looked up and seen the stars and planets, and dreamed of visiting them, and in the 1800s, Eeloo and many new muns were discovered with telescopes, which for a while were kerbin's only means of getting up close to stars and distant planets,  and now we have gotten even more close to space. Then, back in 1926, the first rocket reached space,  and many others soon followed, however, some rockets are not fired off in the name of peace and have become a massive threat now that nukes are being put on them. And then in 1937, Kaputnik 1 was launched by the CKP, and we followed suit with Morning Star 1, and just 1 year ago,  Camlo Kerman became first kerman in space. But some ask: 'Why space?' And I will tell them why, because kerbalkind was made to explore the unknown and do the undone.  And this is my announcement to the world: I believe, that by the year 1950, KERBALKIND WILL HAVE A KERMAN ON THE MUN! And we can and WILL achieve this goal.

Chapter 6

And last, but not least!

-----------------------

Verne 4 would be the final mission in the program, carrying Ludard Kerman as the only pilot.

X minus 5, 4 , 3, Ignition, 1, LIFTOFF!

This mission would have an unusual flight path, as its trajectory made it fly over both poles.

Within 40 minutes, the spacecraft was in orbit.

After about 3 hours in orbit, Verne 4 had to begin reentry, and the retropack was fired.

About 10 minutes after the retro burn, the spacecraft entered the atmosphere.

Soon after reentry, the parachute and landing bag were both deployed

And soon after that, the final Verne mission had touched down.

( I wasn't able to get that many screenshots of ascent due to the rocket flipping over on multiple attempts)

Mini-chapter 2

Enter Excelsior

March 3, 1943

 

 

 

Outside of the Astronaut Complex, the four kerbals of kerbonaut group 1 were chatting about the space program.

Camlo - " I wonder what kind of spacecraft R&D's gonna make next."

Tegas - " Maybe a spaceplane?"

Desnad - " No, probably another capsule."

Camlo - " I mean the Verne capsule was literally just a modified plane cockpit."

Then, Gene appeared.

 

Gene - "Kerbonauts, I have something to show you."

Camlo - "Did you finish selecting the guys for Kerbonaut Group 2?"

Gene - "No, but all of you should follow me."

After a long trek to the runway...

 

Gene - "Enter Excelsior."

Chapter 7

Jeb's First Flight

February 3rd, 1944

Control - Jeb, are all the capsule systems nominal?

Jeb - Everything's operating at peak performance. Can we launch now?

Control - I won't launch until all mechanisms are operational.

Jeb - But everything IS operational.

Control - I know, the countdown will now commence.

CT - X minus 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, ignition sequence start, 2, 1, And liftoff!

Jeb - YESSS!

CT - Also, Wernher noted that the rocket can flip over if you pitch over too fast.

Jeb - You really couldn't tell me BEFORE I started pitching?

CT - Uh oh.

Jeb was able to pull back on the stick hard enough to stop it from tilting forward. But, this caused the rocket to start to tilt backwards, and before long it was out of control.

Luckily, Jeb was able to shut off the engine and jettison the booster.

CT - Jeb, pull the emergency chutes!

Jeb - I can land without them.

CT - But you shouldn't.

Jeb - I will.

CT - Fine.

The aircraft flew lower and lower, and then, it landed very rough, destroying both wings.

CT - I told you you should've used the chutes.

Jeb - Hey, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
