Help with Hinges - can not change angle in orbit

Recommended Posts

After launching a solar array to my station above kerbal the Alligator hinge will not allow me to move it to the right position. It will only allow movement between 90' and 93 but i need it to move to 0' ( closed ) to deploy the array correctly. I REALLY dont want to have to de-orbit, relaunch and connect again. Anything I can do ? I tried sending a engineer up but he still has the same options when clicking on the hinge SOS SOS !

Moving to Gameplay Questions.

So, from looking at this, it appears to me that what's happened is that while you were in the VAB, you must have inadvertently set the angle limits on the hinge to a narrow range (e.g. 90 to 93 degrees).

That angle range is settable in the editor, but not in flight-- meaning that yeah, you're basically hosed now that you're in space.  :(

About the only thing I could think of to try would be to cheat it by manually hacking the game file... but be very careful if you do, it's easy to mess something up and corrupt the file.

If you were to attempt manually hacking it, I'd advise something like this:

  1. Exit your game.
  2. Copy your file persistent.sfs to some other file name, like hacked.sfs.
  3. Open hacked.sfs in a text editor like Notepad.
  4. Find all the places where the error occurs (for example, search for "93".
  5. Edit it to the desired angle range instead of 90 to 93.
  6. Save the text file, then load hacked.sfs in KSP and see if it works.

Again, be really careful if you do that.  Honestly it might be better just to deorbit and re-launch for safety.

after spending a few hours trying to fix and I ended up just relaunching it and chucking the first on in the firepit which only took 30 minutes but did not want to take the easier of the two. Lesson learned. Been playing for nearly 2 years but still so much to learn and still crawling. Thanks for the info.
