They should be your very first flight crew zapy97, and will be reused if you return them alive, if they die it'll be a while before they are revived.

You can edit your persistence file to set their state value, 0 is ready for use I think.

Or you could edit the crew value of the pods in the persistence file, the numbers coincide with the crew, with 1,2 and 3 being Jeb, Bill and Bob.

It is just plain text so open it with notepad or similar (not wordpad though) and scroll down.

Take a good look, it's pretty basic, Jeb looks like this

I edit my code files in Notepad++

but why not Wordpad? Are there some weird characters in there or formatting it doesn't support?

Wordpad does not save files in the same way as notepad or notepad++, it'll mangle the file, making it unreadable by KSP.

You could write a simple script that found any vessel with "debris" in the value for name, and removed it. A for loop in your language of choice would do the trick.
