Two questions about KSP2

Recommended Posts

First question: Will the original four (i.e. Jeb, Bill, Bob and Val) be in KSP2?

Second question: KSP2 will feature interstellar travel and technologies for that, such as the Daedalus drive (the engine that Project Daedalus would use.). One technology for interstellar voyages i particularly like is the Magnetic sail- basically a magnetic field a ship produces and then it uses it like a solar sail or a light sail except the Magnetic sail is a lot faster. Any chance it will be in KSP2?

I can guarantee the original four will be there, and no magnetic sails. Magnetic sails would fail to be effective outside the heliopause and also, are kind of pathetic. How about two different flavors of screaming nuclear salt water rocket?

That graphic is a bit outdated. We know that fusion drives are going to be a part of future-tech, so we know at least one type. We also know that fission fuels are a thing, so NTRs are pretty much in, but whether you count them as part of future-tech or not is kind of up to you, as we did have one of these in KSP.

I think the only fuel type still with a big question mark on it is antimatter. There are some shots in images and trailers released that kind of look like they could be beamed core AM drives, but it's hard to say for sure.

As for magnetic sails, I agree with Wubslin. In the Solar system, the light pressure exceeds solar wind pressure by a decent factor. There are definitely some advantages to a mag sail, but if Kerbol is modeled after Sol, they'd still lose out to solar sails in most situations. If we're going to have either of these, I'd put money on solar sails, but I have strong doubts even about these. You need huge structures for these to be practical, and in a game like KSP, it's hard to make it work both in terms of gameplay and actual game tech. Mag sails would have to be even larger to be practical and wouldn't feel any different in terms of gameplay. I don't see any reason to go for them.

I recall an interview where Nate said he'd like to do solar sails but they're out of scope. That's a while ago though so things could have changed. I will be lobbying for them in a DLC. ;)

Where did you find this?

I pulled it from a screenshot post on the /r/kerbalspaceprogram discord server, but it's pretty evidently from that year old gameinformer article just judging by the visual communication. The two engines on the right are good ol' UBr4 spittin' continuous nuclear explosion engines complete with reaction mass/shield water spray nozzles lining their engine bells to keep the walls cool and turn hard X-rays into reaction force. Pretty cool, huh?

The one fusion drive that we've been shown is the inertial confinement Daedalus drive seen in the original cinematic trailer. If there are others, they haven't been shown. I'm assuming that due to the extremely low acceleration and ridiculous delta-v that this will be the interstellar colony drive of choice. Moving the factories that make the factories, and all that.
