Strange pink balls underwater that are creating intense lag?

I have tried searching the forums, the internet and so on. 

What are these things? And why are they lagging my game so hard? 

I noticed they turned off when I disabled terrain scatters, so they must derive from some sort of vanilla/expansion content? I posted it here anyways since I wasn't sure.

Can you provide a better picture? Turn the ambient lighting up either through the settings or with the Minimum Ambient Lighting mod so we can see what's going on.

They look like some kind of custom underwater terrain scatters, are you using any mods that add underwater stuff?
