changing root part for eva construction

I need to remove a docking port. Unfortunately, after decoupling the ship, the docking port was made to be the root part, and it can't be manipulated by eva construction.

Is there some way around it, or am I stuck with the part being unmovable?

there. that small thing is a slate ascent vehicle, it was sandwitched between the return module and a rover. i removed one docking port (in retrospect, i should have used stage separators, but i figured docking ports may come out useful), but i can't remove the second because it's the root part of the lander.

What about changing your root part, have you tried that?

is there a way to do that?

because if i had known a way to do that, of course it would have been the first thing i would have tried
