[0.17] Planets Forum Signature (v1.1)

After seeing this signature but being a bit disappointed that there wasn't options for just Kerbal orbit, Mun landings, and Minmus landings. So I decided to make my own version.

Suggested usage: Apply a corresponding layer only when you've landed successfully on the planet/moon (don't care if it's manned/unmanned, just as long as it isn't a pile of debris; though obviously just an orbit counts for Jool and Kerbol :P). It's a bit arbitrary, but it gives everyone a standard so that we can infer correctly when seeing others' signatures.

Like the other signature, it works by adding the corresponding layer to the base. Also included is an all version as I used some blending filters on the lines/links, the all version provides is better-looking than all of the others combined over the base.

Note that while I feel it's now ready for release for use, I might still make a few tweaks to it later.

  • Base
  • Laythe
  • Bop
  • Tylo
  • Vall
  • Jool
  • Ike
  • Duna
  • Mun
  • Minmus
  • Orbit
  • Kerbol (Sun)
  • Moho
  • Eve
  • Gilly

Wow, this signature is way better than the other which planets have you been to signature! (no offense to whoever made the other one)

Meh. All depends on what you want. Having buttons and lights gives it a more technological feel, I think. I wanted to try to capture a bit of the planets' and moons' beauty too.

The zip contains the base image (you haven't gone to any planets), and then a layer for every possible highlighted route, all named (including one that can be used on it's own called "all"). You layer the highlighted route images on top of the base image (and each other), and you get a composite image that shows everywhere you've been.

If you're having trouble with the concept of layers, I suggest watching a Photoshop tutorial on the subject (the program might be different but the concepts are the same across every image-editing program I've seen).

Ok, thanks. I'll watch it later.

How do you use it? I can't quite understand how to use it.

It is simple: You extract the images into a folder on your computer. Then you go to the site and open the base image by going to 'open image from computer' and finding it in the folder you extracted it to.

Then you go to the 'layer' tab, select the option 'open image as layer' and then select the image named as the planet you wish to add. Repeat this for all planets/moons you want to add.

In the end, select the option 'flatten image' from the 'layer' tab, go to File/save and save the image somewhere on your computer.

Thanks for the help, but now I get a tiny image.

Huh, strange...

What planets did you want to add? Just mun and minmus? (Can't really see on the tiny image in your sig).

It looks like you uploaded it as an attachment. The forum automatically resizes images; you'll need to upload the image somewhere else. (Even img.ur ...however that's spelt, will do.)

Thanks Awaras; my brain is far too slow this late/early in the day.

pheonix do you mind if I make a web resource out of this so that you could just use a url like "http://nathannifong.com/test/planetsig.php?visited=kerbin,mun,duna" or something like that?

I think your artwork is great, but the usability is bad. and with a little programming it could be as easy a writing a list of the planets you've been to.

Go for it! I was silently hoping someone might do such a thing. :)

Cool, just landed right, no hope of return doesn't factor into this?

Yeah. I've contemplated adding little return lines of a different colour for each destination, but it's way too crowded while also trying to fit into the rules for signatures. :/

If you have Low Bandwidth (Slow Internet) You Can Download PAINT.NET At 3.5 Megabytes: http://www.getpaint.net/

If you have High Bandwdth (Fast internet) You Can Download GIMP at 73.3 Megabytes: http://www.gimp.org/

I personally use PAINT.NET, because i don't like GIMP. It's basically the same thing as Firefox V.S. Chrome, they're both advanced, it's just personal preference.

I have considered that, though I feel they'll either get rather crowded, or require a lot more customization options and work on my part to make it look any good. The file for this right now has...erm...*counts* about 100 layers or so with various filters, rasters, smart objects and so on. (A lot aren't used directly in the final collection of images, but are important things I kept to be able to adjust everything easily later.)

However, if nhnifong or anyone else opts to create an automated web resource that could handle the added complexity with grace, I'd be happy to revise the overlays so that they can show return trips. Though the biggest design constraint with this is size limitations; there's only so much information I can cram into that area without going over the forum's size limits in signatures, and keep it looking...not messy. :P
