Yeah, but you'd be shocked by how heavy the shroud has to be. And in order for it to stretch over a significant portion of the ascent, it will have to have variable geometry.

Lookup "strutjet"/ ducted rocket/  rocket-based combined cycle. It's not going to be an aerospike but it's a rival hybrid engine type to that of the Skylon SABRE.
