Can I transmit my science data?

Recommended Posts

Is this the correct place for help? If not, I’ll remove it.

so on my fourth mun landing, during Bill’s RSV pack antics, the lander’s antenna was destroyed. I do not have enough delta V to get back to kerbin. But I do have a communication satellite orbiting the mun, and 2 comm. satellites orbiting kerbin. I thought I’d be able to use the mun comm. sat. as a relay for my science data. can’t seem to transmit data back to kerbin. Got me wondering if it’s possible. So is it? If not, what are my solutions to get the science back?

You can transmit science data back to Kerbin.  Your issue here is that the capsule you want to transmit from has a broken antenna, and therefore has no working communications devices on it.  Even with the relay in orbit, the capsule you transmit from has to have working antenna on it.

So, what are your options?  Your best bet is to send up a rescue mission and bring Bill and the science data home.  Alternatively, you could send up a fuel carrier and refuel the lander so it can get home.  But if you do that, you'll want to send up an engineer to fix the antenna because Bill won't have SAS (and the craft may be unresponsive due to said lack of communication equipment).

Command pods have built-in antennas, but those cannot transmit science data even if in range (they're also weak, so a relay will only connect from close range to begin with).

This is true.  But the OP did specify that the antenna on his capsule is broken and needs repair, as well as stating that he is incapable of transmitting.  Hence, the antenna needs to be repaired.
